Rating: Summary: Good content and easy to read. Review: This book was perfect for my needs. I already had a bit of experience and wanted to find out what the test covered. I just used this book and the Prep for A+ software on the CD and got 95% core and 93% on the DOS & Windows test.
Rating: Summary: Great book. Simple to follow. Good practice tests on the CD. Review: I have read the other reviews and some are less than kind when it comes to this book. I have been in the computer business for 14 years and I found it to be helpful. The books no frills way of teaching is a refreshing approach. But don't limit yourself to this book alone. I used online practice tests and web sites to help in refreshing my memory.
Rating: Summary: Buy this book, avoid the CD, then buy another book. Review: Coming from only a year of hands-on experience, Gilster's book helped to put concepts I had already dabbled in into concise terminology that helped me pass the test. Many of his chapters provided excellent introductory material to concepts of computing and the DOS/Windows environment, which made this book an excellent beginnning to studying for the A+ exam. Unfortunately, the book does has several typos and a few all-out mistakes, but you'll pick those up when you buy a more advanced test prep book.AVOID THE CD TESTS! The Self-Assessment test is fair but not comprehensive, and the Practice test is riddled with so many mistakes it makes me sick to think about it. One good note on the CD: it provides a number of links to help you find that perfect, SECOND test prep guide.
Rating: Summary: Wanna Pass? Buy This Book! Review: This book was the first resource that I read to prepare for the exam. It was fun to read and I found it to be very useful. While I thought that the presentation and format was too simplistic, I was wrong - it was succeeding in teaching me the material!
Rating: Summary: A good way to get started preparing for the exam Review: I began preparing for the A+ exam with no prior experience as a technician. This book was a good way to get started. However, It was far from enough to finish the job. I took a course and read another text. If this had been my only resource I wouldn't be A+ Certified today!
Rating: Summary: Everything I needed to pass the test Review: I was hoping for a book that would prepare me for the A+ test without a lot of extra information to save me time getting prepared, and that's just what I got. After reading some of the other reviewers, I think they must have corrected many of the errors, because my copy of the book did not have the problems listed. I would like to thank Gilster and Dummies for the helping hand!
Rating: Summary: The Truth and only the Truth Review: I Pass my A+ exams with this book and some other books. For the A+ core exam, you will need some more references than just this book.It will get you close(with just this book, you can score fair but not great)to passing. When you pass the A+Core exam make sure you burn this book UP! cause the dos/win part is so small that you can read it in 15 min.But over all, i give it a "3" cause of the pictures.P.S. on the dos/win exam, there are 2 different test, one on win 3.11,dos,memory management, win 95,troubleshooting and networking(yes networking, each test has at lease 6 questions on it).The other is JUST win95(HARD so Study!
Rating: Summary: I was swindled, this book didn't help me past the exam. Review: I don't get it. This book was published this year. Why doesn't it cover subjects in depth that are on the current exam like modems, multimeters, ATAPI. No wonder this book is ranked in the thousands.
Rating: Summary: Down and gritty test preparation Review: In spite of the few typos in the book (and what book doesn't have them?) that seem to be driving other readers crazy (get over it!), this was an excellent study guide for the A+ test. By focusing on the stuff in the book marked by the icons and really studying the questions in the book, I was able to pass the A+ exams first time. This was a good review guide, but if you don't already know it, look to one of the all-in-ones. I recommend it to anyone with experience looking for a quick and thorough review before the test.
Rating: Summary: Buy A+ for Dummies and get an F on the exam Review: Horrible. For the amount of effort that went into make that CD, this book could have been a useful tool.
