Summary: Deke comes through yet again
Review: I bought one of Deke's first books on Photoshop and loved it. He's only improved with experience. He writes with a personable, non-techie style that's a bit like talking with a friend. His approach using video lessons combined with reading the book is highly effective. I thought I might only need to see the highly informative videos, but trust me, you'll want to read the book. There is so much more, and I've been using photoshop for original art and photo editing for years. Buy it, you'll be glad you did.

Summary: Best book on the Photoshop CS!
Review: After purchasing two other books on Photoshop CS, I discover this one by Deke McClelland. Too bad I didn't find it first. It covers the topics in a clear and comprehensive manner. It also isn't riddled with error and typos like other software manuals I recently purchased. Thank you Deke McClelland & O'Reilly! Now please write/publish a manual for every software package in the CS suite.

Summary: Great set of tools to make you learn Photoshop CS!!!
Review: As a complete newbie of digital design (my background is computer systems, so go figure), i just wanted to learn a little bit of photoshop to edit some picture for my webpages. I get this book and start using it, but since i have had prior experiences with computer graphic books i was not very motivated.

Anyway, first things first, this book come with a cd, that includes the files for the lessons, but most important: Includes also 12 small video lessons (about 10 min each), one per lesson, and that is when i really start learning. First watching the video gives me an overview of the coming lesson, and then, go do the exercises. You wont learn if you dont do!

But be at ease, the exercises are very cleared explained and the book has lots of pictures of the step-by-step process for every lesson.

Actually for me to better learn the tools and commands of photoshop i go rather slow, about one lesson per week. But its up to you, you put the effort and discipline (and your copy of phothoshop, of course), everything else is in this book.

So far i am in the lesson 6, so i still got a long way to go, but if a talentless nerd like myself is now doing nice things inside photoshop cs, I'm sure you will do great!

Summary: The best PS CS book in the market !!!
Review: Believe me, this a must have PS book for all beginner and intermediate users. After you follow 12 lessons, you will master the essentials of using PS. I am not a native speaker, but this book is very easy to follow and understand since it is written in plain English with great Examples and the sense of humor! Those great examples are very useful! Organizing and writing style are also very good! I urge to buy another one of forthcoming One-on-One series from Deke McClelland! Highly recommended!

Summary: Great for Beginners or Curious Intermediate Users
Review: Even beyond computers, I've never found an instructional book thats as comprehensive, concise and enjoyable as Deke's Photoshop CS One-on-One. I've taken classes on Photoshop (for a lot more money) that never blew things up the way the exercises and videos in this package do.

I wholeheartedly recommend it to anybody who either doesn't know where to start with Photoshop, or wants to actually comprehend how it's major functions operate.

Summary: Terrific Tutorial
Review: I am (or can I now say was?) a complete novice at Photoshop. At most I had dabbled with the filters, but was so intimidated by the arcane menu items that I never really even dared to explore much. Mr. McClelland's book is tailor-made for people like me: the included CD-ROM provides a visual overview for each chapter, then the book does a remarkable job of leading you, step by careful step, through every process. I just spent a weekend going through the first three chapters, and even without having finished the whole book yet I feel perfectly confident about awarding this five stars.

Summary: Superb!
Review: I was going to go to a one-day PS-CS seminar, but I bought this book instead for about one-seventh of the price -- and am I glad I did! This is the best tutorial I have ever seen for any product, never mind for PhotoShop (which is as complex and effective a program as any aspiring digital photographer could hope for). Deke presents a course which is at once enjoyable and satisfying. I recommend this product highly.

Summary: Excellent...
Review: I'm not sure if I can add much to the positive reviews so far. This is an excellent text - do yourself a favor and read all the reviews.

For me, I really appreciated the sidebars and "Pearls of Wisdom" scattered throughout the text. In these, the author gives quick insights like; why one tool works better than another or a keystroke reminder or a technical definition.

This book does much more than just tell you how to do something, it also explains why your image changes when using the various tools. In other words, it goes beyond just getting you from A to B. There are a million different ways to get from A to B in Photoshop, so it's nice to learn a few new ones to add to my current Photoshop knowledge.

I use Photoshop basically for two things. Fixing up photos I've taken with my digital camera or scanned in from the family archives and creating images for my personal web site. I found the chapters about highlights, midtones, and shadows and color correction invaluable, especially when trying to fix up some old color pictures of the family from '70s. =)

Excellent book, visually pleasing, highly recommend.

Summary: O'Reiley Grand Slam!
Review: I've been entertaining Photoshop "how-to" books since the big old "Classroom In a Book" version 3 and can only say that now I'm just as excited about Photoshop as when I got that first tutorial book. I've been through a lot of them since then, and nothing has ever done as much justice to this awesome program as Adobe Photoshop CS One-on-One! Some of the things covered I knew, but the way those famliar things are unveiled are once again motivational. Not to mention the things I didn't know about. Software upgrades happen quite frequently, and at times we need upgrading as well. You owe it to yourself, if you are the least bit serious about this app, to work with it and reap the rewards for doing so.
O'Reiley - (hint-hint) the one-on one series could be a good thing for numerous titles and series, I think. By series, I mean - - (for example) CSS One-on-One (beginner to intermediate), CSS One-on-One (intermediate to advanced), etc. Same thing with Dreamweaver, Illustrator, Flash etc. BUT ONLY IF - they are done with the same care, authority, and visually supportive print work, organization and attention to detail as Adobe Photoshop CS One-on-One!
Anyway, that's my review, way to go Deke! I'm in love with Photoshop once again!!

Summary: Probably the best guide to Photoshop on the market
Review: O'Reilly has a knack of publishing really excellent computer books, and this knack is continued with Adobe Photoshop CS one-on-one. The book is published with colour examples throughout, and the author, Deke McCelland, also presents an included CD of video tutorials. These complement the book superbly.

The author covers the major features in Photoshop, but usefully also explains when you should you a specific feature rather than another one. For example, he usefully suggests that the 'Brightness/Contrast...' option can result in pretty awful results, and explains how to change brightness and contrast in a more satisfactory way. The result is that anyone with this book will quickly move from being an amateur user of Photoshop who just gets by, to being an expert who knows how to get the very best results.

The book is very practical, and not a dry run-through of the toolbox. McClelland uses examples - like removing scratches from a scanned image or improving the focus of a photograph - that may well make the reader load up their own pictures half way through a chapter to experiment. The text is very readable, and broken up well with headings.

This is quite possibily the best guide to Photoshop on the market. Highly recommended.
