Summary: An AD Administrator's Must Have
Review: So often with "cut and paste" solution titles, the reader is given a book that assumes no experience on behalf of the user, and wastes a great deal of print on telling you how to open notepad or the command prompt and very little time answering many of the "but wait..." questions that arise from implementing their solution without knowing what you're doing. I was pleasantly surprised to find that this isn't the case with this book.

Don't pick this up unless you are familiar with the environment you are using; the author makes the assumption that you understand Windows and the Active Directory already. Formatted exactly as needed, this reference book (find what you need, rather than a cover to cover read) provides solutions which 95% of the time are native to the "out of the box" environment without need for additional downloads or installs. When you do need a download, its a Microsoft provided add-on and not a third party shareware. The solutions are usually provided as a GUI walk-thru, command line overview and a VBScript example, making this title much more useful than others as it does not alienate administrators of various levels.

With over 320 solutions in 17 different areas, this is recommended Active Directory reference addition for applicable administrators.

Review: Thanks Robbie

I love the books (AD First-Second Edition / AD Cookbook); you have done a great job in detailing the Scrip procedures in the AD Cookbook.
Love the index and tool list. A must get for any Sys Admin / Architect.
As a "Batch er & KIX32 er" I had a hard time getting my head
around VBs or PL your book helped me a great deal.
Appreciate the fact that you are proposing script examples in Perl, VBS, Ldifde or CMD to get the job done. The only suggestion I have more as a question: List a example of a skeleton template vbs script parsing through a excel or csv file for specific User tasks / import via ADSI adding great flexibility in adding Cookbook Recipes to the template as needed. That would be perfect;-).
Also i have owned the Active Directory First edition and enjoyed the technical details.
Great job thank you Robbie

Summary: The ultimate reference for Sys Admins and Developers
Review: The "BEST" computer book I have ever seen and bought. Allen did a tremendous and excellent job by gathering all these recipes in a single and consistent book. He uses different methods via the command lines, Windows GUIs, and scripting (VBSCRIPT & PERL) to get the expected outcome. Developers and system Administrators will really enjoy reading this book and using all these recipes.
This book will save a lot of time looking for the information you need and will help you coding your applications much faster. This book is the best reference that all the system administrators and developers should have. This book is also a great reference for Perl programmers who need to develop applications dealing with Windows environment and ADSI.
Believe me, you will not be disappointed. Enjoy reading the book

Thanks again Allen for your great job

Summary: Everything you need and nothing you don't
Review: The format of this book is fantastic - discussions on how to carry out over 320 system administration tasks, with solutions to each situation using the gui, the command line, and through scripting. Examples are in Vbscipt, but Perl versions are available from the author's web site. Note - this book does not teach you how to program! It dives right in, assuming you are a professional Windows admin who has some scripting knowledge. This is one of the attractions of the book for me - I've got 4 books that tell me how to use Vbscript and Perl already! I wanted a book that showed me what to do with that knowledge, and this is that book!

Summary: Simply Amazing!!!
Review: The most detailed and concise book I have ever read. I am an Engineer and have not done much with scripting, this book makes it clear and simple.
You can download all the examples from the web site and modify as needed. I have used this book to write a web site my Help staff uses to pull real time reports out of AD.
The script for finding stale accounts saved me weeks trying to verify and locate dead computers.
A "Must" have for anyone dealing with Active Directory along with "Managing Enterprise Active Directory"
This is the most valuable book I have in my libary.

Buy It, don't even think twice, you need this book!!

Summary: Answers Questions
Review: This book consistently answers questions I've been asking. How refreshing. This is a good investment for anyone who wants to go beyond the GUI.

Summary: Immediately useful
Review: This book has already saved me hours by providing relevant solutions to AD issues in our environment. I don't always have time to read the full white papers so this book is ideal since it cuts to the chase providing detailed samples of 'how-tos' and solutions in more than one format (eg VBscript, Perl, command line). Examples of code allow one to tweak 'recipes' as needed to suit the issue. Even if you use a fraction of the recipes in the book it could end up saving hours of work. Glad I bought it!

Summary: Great book for your scripting needs
Review: This book has been a life saver! I was struggling to find ways of using Python to automate Active Directory tasks. The Perl scripts provided by the author on his Web site (...) proved to be very easily translated to Python. I was impressed by the wide range of issues covered in the book. No fluff, just solid technical details. Definitely a 5 star!
