Summary: Great Intermediate Java Book
Review: Already know how to program? Understand a little about Object-Oriented programming concepts? Don't want to waste your time reading three or four Java books to find a good one? Try 'Thinking in Java'. I just graduated from college and have very little programming experience. I found the book 's concepts easy to understand (except inner classes). Most importantly it provides a closer look at the Java programming language than other texts and you will get a better understanding of how Java works. Each chapter is filled with lots of useful information (not wordy, like other books). Some of the later chapters provide a great primer to understanding advanced topics. This is NOT a 'how to program' book. It is book for those who want to understand 'how Java works' behind your program.

Summary: Thinking in java
Review: This book seems to be simple and easy to understand for the beginners

Summary: Great book , but..
Review: Great way to teach JAVA! Specially for people like us who are clear with C++. It could have been better if author had explained with some diagrams. Specially complex issues like inner class etc.

Summary: Great Reference for Experienced Object-Oriented Progrmmers
Review: It is a comprehensive Java book about the language itself, not JDK. It talks nothing about how to use any IDE or how to organize your source code and things like that. This book assumes you know how to compile and run Java in your environment and focus only on the language.

The book is conprehensive enough that covers almost everything in Java language in all aspects and even move towards design pattern. Each chapter precisely touches the topic with easy to follow sample codes. Key points of object-oriented language are emphasized and highlighted into different chapters, which is especially good for programmers who know exactly what they're looking for. Beginers might feel the book a little fragmented.

Summary: A reference book
Review: Before buying this book, please throw the hype revolving around this book, if you are new to java this is not the book for you, this book is not a starter, this book expects a certain level of evolution in you as a programmer, when you approach this book as a reference manual you will gain a lot,but when you approach this as a startup tutorial you may end frustrated,so use this as an reference as and when the need arises you may gain plenty, but if you start reading it from cover to cover you may forget what you learnt in the previous chapter. This is because there is lot of information packed with this stuff,so you can digest it across time. So in a sentence ,if you are a java programmer this is a great thing to happen to you, if you want to learn java from this book from scratch ,think twice. Let me congratulate Bruce for the tresure of information accumulated in this book.

Summary: Very Clear
Review: Although some say his introductions are to lengthy he writes very clearly and gives excellent examples on most of what he discusses. This book has been incredibly helpfull for me and has given me a better understanding to many concepts in programming in general not just Java.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Excellent Java Intro to anyone!
Review: As a novice programmer, Thinking in Java is the best intro Java book I have ever read. It is clear and precise. I love the examples in the book. I can not say enough good things about the book.

The book is free for download. Just run a search for the book at any search engine. Also buybooks.com offers a cheaper price for the book than Amazon. Check it out.

Summary: Good book... but not the first 80 pages.
Review: About 10 pages into this book, I think you'll really enjoy it. However, if you are not already familiar with Object Oriented Programming (OOP), I think you'll find the next 50 pages very confusing. I recently discussed this book with other Java programmers I know - we all agreed that the initial OOP converage is weak.

However, the remainder of the book is excellent. I do recommend it, especially for C++ programmers or those who already understand the basics of OOP.

Summary: Detailed explanation of all the OO aspects of Java
Review: A "Must" have for both Beginners and Experienced Programmers. After buying several books which went into graphics and other aspects of Java with very little explantion of the language, I could finally find a book which explained all the aspects of the language. This is undoubtedly an "Encyclopeadia" for the Java Language.

Rating: 3 stars
Summary: THE BOOK IS GOOD BUT BORING AND LITTLE PRACTICAL
Review: If you already know OO concepts and you come from a language as C++, this book is very boring. The book is not schematic and it is diffucult to re-find the concepts read. The language syntax must be take from the examples.
