Rating: Summary: OK for Beginners Review: This book contains some needed information for the beginner and was of great assistance to me during my first Linux experences. I think now though, this book is badly outdated. It has very little pertaining to the new Red Hat 5.0 or newer distrabutions, and it's not up to date on the new Slackware distrubutions. However I think this book has some good fundamental information.
Rating: Summary: Excellent for beginners and good reference work. Review: This was the second book I bought on Linux (Teach Yourself Linux in 24 Hours was the first). This is a terrific book for the beginning to intermediate Linux user. Running Linux is not geared toward any particular distribution, therefore it can be used for any of them. I'd definitely recommend this book be used in conjunction with the manual that ships with your particular distribution and you'll have a formidable reference for installing and using Linux. This book definitely succeeds where other books fail by going more in depth into the commands and apps (such as Emacs and Vim) than some other works. Take a look at this and the other reviews. So many 9's and 10's should convince you that this one is definitely a winner.
Rating: Summary: One of the best books on Linux Review: I've read a few books on installing and running Linux so I have found out that this is one of the few books that you really need to install and run Linux. The other book should be by the slackware creator. Newbies should realize that Linux will be trickier, but superior to commercial OSes. Don't take my words for it. Go to your local bookstore and scan through it.
Rating: Summary: A Great Guide to Linux Review: I bought this book after I had been using Linux for around 2 months. My only regret was that I didn't buy it sooner. I would recommend this book to anyone starting out with Linux, or even a more experienced user. It is written in the timeless O'Reilly fashion in that it is clear, concise, and easy to understand, for the advanced user and the novice alike. I gave this book a 9 in the hope that there will be a third edition which will top it. :-) I would recommend this book highly, as I would nearly any book from O'Reilly.
Rating: Summary: Readable, comprehensive, and a good reference item. Review: This is for the reviewer who gave the book a "1". Uhh, Matt Walsh WROTE most of the material you saw on the Linux homepage. The information he provided online and elsewhere since the early 90's has played an important role in the success Linux is currently enjoying...
Rating: Summary: The One to Get. Review: As others have pointed out, this is the book to get if you can only have one Linux book. The section entitled "What to do in an Emergency" pulled my posterior out of the fire several times. One caveat: Linux Newbies should get additional material from elsewhere for more detailed and up to date installation help.
Rating: Summary: Good book for Linux newbie Review: As excellent book for the Linux newbie. I found solutions to about 75% of my problems using this book. If you're new to Linux, get this book. For those more experienced Linuxers, find a more advanced book. This book was meant for the newbie. It does not go into very much detail and is very general.
Rating: Summary: What K&R is to C, W&K are to Linux Review: If you're going to get just _one_ book about the world's most exciting (and innovative) operating system, this is it. Matt and Lar dispense the information in an easily-digestible manner. It's evident the authors both know and love Linux. The reader will share the enthuiasm and gain the knowledge to not only get Linux "running" but to tune it for optimum usage, too. [Matt does need to realize, though, that his void main() example is a copyrighted idiom reserved only by the eternally hapless Herb Schildt].
Rating: Summary: A Great Book for Linux Beginners Review: I bought this book based on the knowledge I had on the Linux operating system. I was right, it was just what I was looking for. From the basics of installing the program, to programming languages, it covers absolutely everything! Matt writes so well, that it amazed me. Don't hesitate, buy it now!
Rating: Summary: WWWWWWWWWWWWWoooooooooWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWw Review: I was surprised at the upmost stupidity of the author in this book. This is just like what you can read on the linux homepag
