Summary: Slightly outdated, good reference material
Review: The text was slightly outdated pertaining to the smail information, and sendmail isn't covered at all. Other than that, the text is one of the best linux texts I have used.

Rating: 3 stars
Summary: Great Book on Linux. Dated, though.
Review: It's 1999 almost. Linux has progressed so much since 1996. I can't wait for a 3rd edition since there is no substitute for ORA books when it comes to linux/unix literature.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: An excellent reference, but a little out-of-date.
Review: Running Linux is a very well-written, clear book. It is reasonably complete, but unfortunately the most recent edition is from 1996, so it's kind of outdated, but still contains lots of useful information.

Summary: The Publisher's review is confusing
Review: The Publishers review lead me to belive there was a CD rom of Linux included which there is not. Running linux with out Linux Thats a Trick

Summary: A great book!
Review: I am extremely pleased with this book. The reason it does not cover individual distributions, though, is to keep it as "universal" as possible. This way, it can be used very easily with all distros. It is very detailed and well organized. It is good for both complete novices and experts. I highly recommend it.

Summary: Great Reference...Typical O'Reilly
Review: And O'Reilly does it again, courtesy of Welsh and Kaufman. This book provides an in-depth look at installation, networking (dial-up included!), X configuration (& window managers), system maintenance, and more. Unlike many Linux books I've seen, this isn't a philosophical speel.

The coverage here is better than usual although it isn't exhaustive. And Slackware folks will find the descriptions extremely familiar.

-A great read when trying to setup a basic Linux system. An even-better reference.

Summary: You really need this book...
Review: I've been trying to discover a reference that maked me happy when I was in front of a linux machine. This book has saved me lots of time when I needed to backup my servers, when I needed to see my linux running... This book is something that you might have on your shelf, just to realize that it will be there...

Summary: Excellent source for basic Linux information
Review: I've referred to this book many times during my first two weeks running Linux and it has been a great help. It is easy to read and provides tons of basic information about Linux, perfect for the first time Linux user. I would suggest using this book in conjunction with the installation HOWTO's that are available on the web. The HOWTO"s will provide you with help on the current Linux versions and Running Linux will bring you up to speed on the basics of the system. A very good book

Summary: Strongly recommended
Review: Running Linux is one of several books I have on Linux. I found this to be very informative, well layed-out, full of very useful information. I would suggest purchasing this book. If you are going to buy one book, this should be it.

Summary: Well written, but dated...
Review: This is a very well written and readable volume on Linux. However, it suffers because of it's age. Linux is a very dynamic OS and has seen much development in the years since this book was published. Hence much of the discussion, while at one time necessary, is somewhat lacking in relevance for more modern distributions. The book does have value though and is an enjoyable read. If I was reviewing this back in '96 it would most assuredly rate a 5. For today you may be better off with something a bit more up to date, however, such as the "Complete Guide to Linux".
