Summary: Great book, but not entry-level material
Review: The book serves as a great reference, if you know what you are doing. However, the writer assumes that the reader already knows some programming, and keeps refferring to C or C++. For those who are just starting off, the book might seem a bit difficult to read, and considering that it has explenations only, and limited in examples and/or practical tutorials, it is not a great "learning" book.

Summary: Its the reference, but don't use it for learning
Review: Unless you happen to have a degree in Unix and programming (I haven't anyway), don't use this book to learn Perl beyond Randal's Llama book (Learning Perl, excellent!). Programming Perl is a complete reference of the language but is was not made for teaching you Perl. Advanced Perl like references (actually everything after chapter 4) is quite diffucult to understand in the way it was written. Yes, I read the Llama book first but this doesn't mean you will understand the Camel. I would recommend:

more examples (and their outputs)
less focus on cool snippets (provide every day code)
less C and Unix (Perl is mutli platform, why refer to a Unix man page instead of explaining a function?)
try to find simple words to explain things.

Not everyone is an advanced programmer but everyone should use Perl. Its a wonderful language.

Summary: Good but not superb
Review: The definitive Perl book -- of course. But it's my feeling that at times, Larry was forgetting that the purpose of this book is not *only* to demonstrate his absolute superiority over the humble reader. The book would certainly win if a few phraseological masterpieces were deleted and dumb phrases like "A means this-and-this, and B means that-and-that" substituted instead. In particular, it is impossible to understand the really juicy things -- modules, references, and all that -- from this book unless you happen to understand them already.

Summary: Doesn't get any better!
Review: I read this book cover-to-cover in about three days. Perl is my first programming language (hopefully of many) and this book made it easy to learn. I wondered whether I should have been starting with "Learning Perl", but I never felt this book was too far over my head.

For somebody who has little exposure to programming-type things, the slower book might be better, but my only experience is with HTML, and I did just fine.

Summary: "THE" Perl Book
Review: I picked up this book hoping to learn from it and got a lot more than that, I have had problems with other perl books but this one was totally organized and very well written. I understood the book from begginning to end, and if a 13 year old like me can understand a so simple/complicated book like this than anyone can enjoy it and benefit from it as much as I have.

Summary: "THE" Perl Book
Review: I recently purchased a copy "Programming Perl" and found it to be easy to understand and that it didnt leave anything important out that other books I have bought on perl have. The book is exellently organized and was enjoyable to read. And if I, a 13 year old can have a clear understanding of what the author is trying to make clear and teach you from reading the book then anyone can pick it up and enjoy/learn from it.

Summary: It is Really good
Review: I am a beginner with CGI and Perl . I can programming in C, Fortran and Basic. And I think this is a good book for beginners. Thank You Zulkif SALTIK

Summary: Don't buy any other books on Perl!
Review: This book has absolutly everything you'll need to know about Perl. The only other book I would recommend is Learning Perl from O'Reilly. I develop CGIs for a job, and this book is an invaluable reference. I have been much impressed with this book. BUY IT! =)

Summary: Just mazing, all I can say :-)=)
Review: Oky, this is the DEFINITE book on Perl, I mean, who else, than the person who created Perl could have such a fascinating sight on the language ??? The book is full of interesting aspects unusual to normal programming-languages, showing the speciality of Perl, and the humor of Larry is amazing ... I had loads of Phun-hours with this nice piece. If you want to learn Perl, go and get it, Perl is not CGI, Perl is besides Python the best Language for rapid prototyping, and esp. the RegExps are the most complex ones I've seen around, Perl and this book give you the ultimate Power for Text-Processing (Log-Analyzing etc.) and everything beyond.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Great book for intermediate to advanced Perl scripters.
Review: This is a great book for users who are not new to perl but would like a understanding of the "not-so-basic" Perl functions. This book does have some basic instruction, but is really lacking . The only big complaint I have about this book is the very limited instruction on how to create modules. With that in mind, I still feel that any "real" Perl programmer should have this on his desk.
