Summary: good
Review: good boo

Rating: 3 stars
Summary: not perfect, but not awful
Review: I'd give this book a four but I get the feeling there are a lot of overenthusiastic souls out there reviewing it.

The book is so-so as a reference, so-so as a comedy. As many others have said, the examples are thin, and many times overly clever, with the equivalent of C expressions like *p++ = --(*foo); who needs that? The humor made me laugh, but I'm a total nerd about that kind of stuff.

The sections on references, modules, and objects were possible to understand, but far too difficult to be used as a quick reference book.

That said, I don't know of a good alternative and probably couldn't write it here if I did.

Summary: not at all for novices
Review: a good book for experts but doesn't serve the purpose for novices. maybe larry should consider such feedbacks seriously and come up with a book for starters.

Summary: A magic book
Review: Like many O'Reilly books, this one has the uncanny habit of falling open to the page with exactly what you're looking for--even before you fully understand what you're looking for. And if you're not looking for anything in particular, it invariably falls open to something you'll immediately find a use for. Not a tutorial (that's what the Llama book is for), but rather the only reference book on Perl anyone will ever need, and one of the best programming books around, period.

Summary: A bit better, a bit worse
Review: It's an upgrade to perl5. The book is good as reference. Compared to the old one, the good news is that the annoying nerd humour with biblical parallels is toned down and the writing overall improved. The bad news is that they ripped out nearly all the code, so it's now not as clear as it used to be. The latter notwithstanding, the book is thicker than the old one--because of the somewhat eclectic overview of the (numerous now) modules. So, now you need two books--this one and the 'Cookbook...'

Summary: WOW!!!
Review: First i bought a book about cgi programming in a week or so that was very expensive, but i had to learn the hard way, never buy a book with "learn in xxx many days", anyway, i bought the Learning Perl book after that, i didnt learn anything from the old expensive book, but this book is a killer, im not even finished with it and i've already made search, poller, and some other cool scripts. I also want to say that i knew nothing about perl when i bought this book, so if you wanna learn perl, and learn it good then this is the book for you, all in understanable, easy to read english, so damn good. A MUST HAVE !! ;)

Summary: It's so-so until chapter 5, then it's chaos.
Review: O'Reilly is notorious for taking the cheap road when it comes to writers, and you really feel it when you hit chapter 5. They seem to be spitting every last little detail about packages/mods at you all at once, rather than starting with basics and building up. All I want to do is the perl equivalent af a simple #include, and it's taken me 4 hours to get a "hello world" function to be called from another .pl file.

Summary: The Camel is still the best.
Review: Wall states up front that you should read another book to learn the basics. He then goes on to turn out the definitive Perl reference.

Rating: 3 stars
Summary: Starters should look for something else, and ...
Review: I have both v.4 and v.5 of this Camel book, and have been using it from time to time. I know it's written by the creator of Perl. Yet I feel like saying the following: It looks to me that this book has tried to be an introduction to and reference of Perl at the same time, yet somehow IMNSHO it is not particularly successful in either ways. I do thank Mr.Wall for creating Perl, though.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: A must-have for every Perl programmer
Review: This book is the authoritative guide to Perl. It is not always easy reading, but it is an indispensable reference book.
