I have a really hard time conveying the right feeling with, balancing or even playing with type in my designs. This book was suggested to me by a person I have a great deal of respect for, so I read it.It has made all the difference in the world! It explains the different faces, how type can enhance or destroy your piece, and how to not mess up the choices too badly. I would recommend this book to anyone who is trying to understand how type affects the way people see you publication or ad or people who are trying to get a handle on using type as a design element.

Before reading this book, I thought the font Gaudi was named after the architect of La Sagrada Familia. The book is written in a down-to-earth tone of voice that held my interest. It gives a good introduction to the use of grids in layout and why they are so important. Basics such as x-height, linespacing, letterspacing and ligatures are covered. Some intriguing typographical history is worked in to give explanation to the current state of type. Most pages give samples of popular fonts. You'll probably have to do a lot more reading and practicing before becoming a typographic expert, but this little book covers a lot of relevant information for the novice in an accessible manner. Several times, the author makes mention of today's cheap paperback novels that are produced without any thought to good design. This book isn't one of those. Each page has been painstakingly well designed, and the price tag shows it.

Rating: ![3 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-3-0.gif) Summary: Not bad, but definitely not great Review: If you know nothing at all about type, this is a fine introduction. But it stops at the surface. It does cover the various attributes and functions of type, and it's a very quick read (every other page is a picture), so it's definitely not useless. But it's a scattered book that avoids depth at the expense of flashiness. If you're serious about learning about typography, this is probably not the text for you. If you're bored on a subway, or just curious about graphic design, it might be a fun read. Though it serves its purpose as a typography book for the masses, I was left unsatisfied with this "timeless classic on typography."

Rating: ![4 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-4-0.gif) Summary: An inspiring definition on the art of today's typography. Review: If you like the art of the printed page and wondered about typography, this is a good book to lay
your hands on. With information presented in a well laid out, sophisticated package, Erik
Spiekermann and E.M. Ginger justifies the need for knowing typography by showing you what
type and layout can do for information in the 90's. For the educated designer the content inside
offers nothing new. However, for a budding design artist who has wondered what "good"
typography really means, "Stop Stealing Sheep & Find Out How Type Works" is an inspiring
definition.

A must have for every designer (for the beginers to learn and for the experimented for not forgiving!).
Rating: ![3 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-3-0.gif) Summary: Good for an overview Review: It was a good, entertaining read, if a bit light on actual content. Useful if you have no idea what type to pick, but if you've ever thrown something together by the seat of your pants and had someone comment favorably on it, you probably don't need this. Some people are born with an innate design sense -- this is for those who weren't.
