Summary: one of my favorite books
Review: This is an EXCELLENT book, especially for beginners. She has a great writing style so everything is clear and understandable. You won't be disappointed!

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Good but lacks details
Review: I'm glad I bought this book but I think it lacks in details. Visual examples are very useful but I would like more details on various graphics design principles. But it's excellent for novices.

Summary: I have become empowered -- In just a few hours!
Review: This book is fantastic for my whole family. Most of us now have computers, printers, and software capable of turning out beautiful documents -- we just don't know design principles. That's where this book comes in. Now my husband's Government presentations and reports will look better. My son's school papers will look like they should receive an "A." And my marketing proposals, sales presentations, and in-house marketing collateral will look more professional. Thanks for the CRAP! (you have to read the book to get it)

Summary: Great book for the design novice
Review: I have always wondered if real people write these reviews. Well, I found book worth commenting on. This is a great book for people who don't have any design training and need a quick course. I wish I had read it a few years ago.

Summary: Opens your eyes to the designed & printed world around you!
Review: I bought this site unseen just from reading the reviews here. I never believed any of them were as true and honest as this! The book made me look at things in a way I never had before, and pointed out all the amateurish things I am doing in my publications. This is money well spent.

Summary: A definite for your desktop!!!
Review: I'm just one of the many folks who agree, this is an oustanding book!! As a beginning designer/desktop publisher, this book is a wonderful resource. I read it cover to cover and learned so much!! I really look at everything I see in print, with a much more knowledgeable eye. Designs that I've been using to build my portfolio are more "amateurish" than I realized and I'll be redesigning them with tips from Robin Williams. If you're designing ANYTHING to be printed, you need this book!!!

Summary: Great for Educators!
Review: I deserve a commission for all the copies of this book I have sold! I use this book as a text book in my classes for teachers on graphic design and doing desktop publishing with kids. I have several teachers in my school trained to teach kids the basics of graphic design - Robin Williams style! I have bought several copies myself because I keep lending it to people and I don't get it back. This has been one of the most useful texts I have come accross for classroom use!

Summary: The Secret to my Success! (Robin Slam-dunks with this Book!)
Review: First and foremost, thanks to the author. I am a computer consultant and this book allowed me to complete several websites using the design principles within.

I also am preparing to purchase her new book "The Non-Designer's Web Book : An Easy Guide to Creating, Designing, and Posting Your Own Web Site" without hesistation.

The design of the book assists in illustrating the principles described within, the author presents the information in a logical well thought out fashion.

I would recommend (and have) this book to engineers and other technical individuals who are faced with the need to produce web sites and other design oriented projects.

I like many others have the technical expertise to produce HTML, cgi, perl and java - I just needed someone to help bring my site ideas and design principals into focus.

I guess it's like having a professional designer on call, except you can't beat her rates. If you are looking for a great book on typography along with some basic design information then this book is for you.

I've had more success with this book than with any of my other $50 - $70 manuals describing website design.

I could go on but I think you get the general idea. This is a good investment.

Feel free to email me if you find anything half as good! tcarter@sphericalthinking.net

Summary: A wonderfully concise, and practical guide to basic design
Review: This basic guide to design principles is not only clearly written, it "walks the walk" as well as "talks the talk". That is, the basic principles are demonstrated clearly by the book's many "before and after" graphic examples. It is non-technical and easy to understand. It focuses on a few core ideas that will help anybody improve his or her ability to design attractive printed material. There is some overlap between this and the author's book on web design (The Nondesigners' Web Book), but I found both worthwhile.

Summary: Number one book in print for the first time designer.
Review: I purchased this book when I first started out in design. It was like a bible. Robin Williams is the single most experienced, yet flexible individual in design today. If you don't believe me read any of her books. (especially this one)
