Summary: Snoopy the World War I Flying Ace takes on the Red Baron
Review: Lucy thinks that Snoopy should have a real job, but she forgets that in his spare time our favorite beagle is a World War I flying ace whose has the heavy responsibility of doing battle with the famous Red Baron. There is just something about Snoopy putting on his helmet, scarf, and goggles and climbing aboard his trusty Sopwith Camel (the one that looks like a red doghouse). Long before imagination and reality collided on a daily basis in "Calvin and Hobbs," Charles M. Schulz had Snoopy going on dangerous missions. "Snoopy: Flying Ace to the Rescue" works bits and pieces of Schulz's original strips into a narrative whole for young readers to enjoy.

Adapted by Darice Bailer, Charlie Brown's dog takes off to do battle with the Red Baron only to get shot down and have to make it back safe and sound to his camp after traveling through enemy lines. The chief charm of the story is how we go back and forth between Snoopy's vivid imagination and the real world, where snowballs, water dishes, jump ropes and footballs become parts of the adventure. The art adapted by Peter and Nick LoBianco is first rate and seamless; it sure looks like Schulz's artwork. This is a Level 2 Ready-to-Read book, which emphasizes reading independently by offering more-complex stories and varied sentence structure. "Snoopy: Flying Ace to the Rescue" is, of course, just one of several Peanuts books in this series.
