Description:

For kids who can't get enough of the action-packed movie, Ted Conner's easy-reader novelization of X-Men 2 provides some kid-friendly background to the movie's characters and plotline. This time around, the warring camps of the first movie--led by Magneto and Dr. Xavier, respectively--must team up to fend off a common foe: William Stryker and his shadowy government operatives, who plan to exterminate every mutant on earth. All the heroes and most of the villains of the original movie make appearances, and young fans of the X-Men will love the big-screen debut of Nightcrawler, Iceman, Pyro, Colossus, and a host of other super-powered characters, in a plot that involves obligatory chases, fight scenes, double crosses, and puffed-up comic-book oratory. Of course, older kids will demand the grownup adaptation, written by longtime X-Men comics writer Chris Claremont, which delivers far more in its 408 pages compared to this book's slim, large-type 156. Be warned, though, that the Claremont version has aspects appropriate only for grownups, from more swearing to (perhaps worse) sometimes tedious exposition. (Ages 9 to 12) --Paul Hughes
