Summary: What the Point?
Review: Beginning in late 2001, a huge wave of 1980s nostalgia has been sweeping the country. One product of this is a new comic book series based on the 1980s hit cartoon series, "The Transformers". It's a story about giant robots from the planet Cybertron engaged in a millions-years-old civil war, which has been brought to Earth. The war is fought by the heroic Autobots and the evil Decepticons. These robots can transform into things such as cars, tanks, jets, and guns. There were 98 episodes of the cartoon series. At the same time, Marvel had published a comic book series that ran for 80 issues (plus some crossovers in "G.I. Joe"). Then there was a 12-issue "Transformers: Generation 2" sequel series. These series occured in a different universe than the cartoon series and did the story their own way. In 2002, a new company called Dreamwave started publishing their own "Transformers: Generation One" comic books. Unfortunately, Dreamwave isn't sticking to the cartoon continuity or the Marvel continuity. They've created their own Transformers universe that borrows bits and pieces from each. Transfans have dubbed Dreamwave's series "Neo-G1", and that's very appropriate. Dreamwave has expanded on this universe with 8 character profile books, some of which are collected in this trade paperback. In total, there are profiles for hundreds of classic characters with new artwork. So, is this trade paperback worth getting? I'd say no. These profiles don't pertain to the old cartoon series or the Marvel comic book series. They pertain only to Dreamwave's "Neo-G1" Transformers universe. Contrary to Dreamwave calling these guides a "refresher course" for people that grew up with the show, they won't help you in understanding the show. There's no point in reading new profiles for old characters in what amounts to a slapped-together, rehashed G1 Transformers universe. Even if you're a big Transformers fan, it's not essential. It's really nothing more than expensive, glorified fan fiction written by a fanboy.

Summary: Transformer Guidebook 2
Review: This book has some great details, with full color pictures on glossy paper. It give the bios, abilities, strengths and weakness of all the Autobots and Decepticon from the beginning and other Transformers I have never seen from the original that came out in the late 1980's from Marvel Comics and Hasbro.

I wish they had put this book into one instead of two volumes and if possible in hard back cover like the Transformers "The Ultimate Guide".

If you like the Transformers from the 1980's, I think you will like this guidebook.
