Summary: Fantastic read
Review: Very enjoyable book and a great, easy read.

Worth reading to relax.

Summary: 840 pages in six days
Review: I don't have time to read 140 pages a day, but I made time for this book. A couple of times I picked it up and read the first page then stopped. Then, last Sunday, I got through the first chapter... and went to sleep at 4am. I eventually got to the end on Friday night. It is strange but apparent that the books are published in this series in chronological order, rather than the way they were written. My only regret is that I can read these books faster than they can write them.

Summary: Welcome to the Liaden Universe!
Review: This omnibus is the introduction to your soon to be life-long friends, Miri and Val Con, and his foster brother Shan and his soon-to-be lifemate Priscilla. You will read them over and over again, I gurantee it! You will not be able to put them down!

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: buy two copies, cause you'll want to loan it to your friends
Review: I have three copies of this book -- one to re-read and two to loan to others. It is a GREAT series and I highly recommend it.

Summary: This is what SF is about
Review: Great world building, great characters, fascinating plots, a sense of imagined depths yet to be plumbed -- this is what SF is all about. Though it does not have the depths of some of the true classics like _Dune_ and may not suit dedicated fans of real hard *science* fiction ala Hal Clement, it is space opera of the very, very highest order - and I mean that in the best possible way. Buy and enjoy!

Summary: Instant Lost Weekend
Review: If you pick up this book on a Friday evening, expect not to do anything else until Monday morning...

The Liaden Universe is like James Clavell in space. The plots are not quite so complicated, and the pace is faster, but the focus on interweaving conflicts of duty, profit, and romance remind me a lot of Noble House or Tai-Pan.

In the Liaden Universe, there are two primary rules. Don't start fights. Always finish them.

One thing that might throw some people off is that the authors are very strict about not "explaining" anything. It's up to the reader to puzzle out who the Liadens, Yxtrang, Terrans, Turtles, Clans, witches, healers, etc. are. This isn't as hard as it sounds like, because the authors want you to figure out the puzzle. And it makes the books a great re-read, since you don't have to wade through pages of exposition explaining things you already know -- it's straight into the action right away.

But that doesn't mean the world is constructed shoddily. Everything hangs together fairly consistantly, nothing seems to be added on as an afterthought just to advance the plot.

You will certainly want to read Plan B after this one -- do not read them out of order!

Summary: It's grammatical!
Review: okay, not the highest praise for most, but after being driven into foaming-at-the-mouth irritation by editors who can't conjugate simple english verbs (the past tense of 'spit' is SPAT, dammit), and having begun to feel that i was the last person in this country even to have heard of the perfect tenses, never mind be able to use them grammatically, here are authors who actually use the subjunctive voice properly. oh, frabjus day. and they write well--no, they write incredibly well. these books should be required reading just for the superb use of english.

as to the rest of the wonders of these books, the other reviewers have covered the fabulous characterizations, the superlative dialogue, the marvelous plotting (don't worry, i'll run out of adjectives soon), the awe-inspiring world building.

oh, i'll just be blunt: READ THESE BOOKS. NOW. THEY'RE WONDERFUL.

Summary: Can't Wait for More!
Review: These authors get better as their story grows. I can take or leave Conflict of Honors, but Agent of Change really reeled me in. The writing can be rough in places, and the publisher's editor fell asleep all too often (typos galore), but Val Con and Miri were worth the extra effort. It all comes together in Carpe Diem, with better writing (tho, alas, not editing) and a compelling story. I'm kicking myself for not ordering Plan B sooner -- now I have to wait 2-3 weeks to continue the story.

Summary: Great Fun
Review: I loved these stories. They were a fun adventure with some nice romance. One Warning to the uninitiated though, these stories can be highly addictive!

Summary: Thank You Publishers!
Review: I used to check the bookstores every week or so for new volumes in this series. (Trust me, I'm not the kind of fan-fanatic who generally does this for other books.) Then I checked once a month. Then I checked once a quarter or so, and at long last once a year. (Hope dies hard.)

Thanks to Meisha Merlin publishers this series is back in reprint and more novels are scheduled at long last come out. Which means now I can replace my very worn originals with fresh acid-free paper printed versions, plus indulge in reading the rest of the story.

I've already read and reread the first books in the series more than 10 times over the years because they are fun and intelligent and witty. I can say that of practically no other books on this planet.

Buy this. Heck, if you don't like this book (even a little) then email me and I'll reimburse you personally!
