Rating: Summary: Informative, Insightful and Well-researched. Review: This book is a delight. It breaks the myth of assimilation and defines acculturation. EST is a well-written and occassionally humourous look at all the Asian influences in the USA. Very well organized and easy to read. Read it and get smarter!!
Rating: Summary: This is where East meets West! Review: This book is a great look into the ever growing Asian Culture in the the 90's! Jeff Yang is my second-cousin and we've spoken for hours on end about his book. It's amazing how much information you can learn from this. Being Taiwanese, I found this book a fresh breath from the Asian Sterotypes. It has everything for everyone, not just non-Asians. It includes the histories of Film&Movies, Literature, Food, Culture, Music, Tradition and other interesting catagories. This is truly where East meets West! Asian culture given a new fresh wind in the 90's. Bravo!
Rating: Summary: Fun grab bag of Asia-related influences on U.S. pop culture Review: This is an enjoyable, fun survey of Asian influences on American pop culture. Some of the reviews above are a bit harsh. Take this for what it is: a grab bag of very short, engaging nuggets of pop-Asian trivia, written with an American/Canadian audience in mind, formatted in an off-beat manner (altho the layout can be a bit hard to read at times, if you sometimes have trouble reading Wired Magazine because of the fonts, backgrounds, etc, you may find the same difficulty here). I haven't found anything else like this anywhere -- pretty much a one of a kind resource.
Rating: Summary: Pathetic Attempt to Showcase Asian Heritage Review: This is truly a pathetic attempt to showcase anything dealing with the Asian Heritage. I love learning about the Asian culture, but this just demeans it and enlightens no one. They shouldn't put the name of Buddah on a book to sell it. Don't bother reading this junk. If you're Asian, you'll be embarrassed. If you're non-Asian you'll laugh at the Asians.
Rating: Summary: more trendy garbage from this stupid magazine Review: this magazine is so bad and white washed. i can see it now: hip city dwellers invite friends over, friends look on covvee table and see EST, and say oooh! how interesting! i love asian culture! i love hong kong films and mao suits! what a load of garbage. i feel sorry for all you asian hipsters who are victim to this whole asian fetish thing. dont you remember the racism of your childhood?
Rating: Summary: fay chong fay chong NICE! Review: written wonderfully nice. the writers at A Mag did an excellent job capturing the very essence of Asian American pop culture. ok maybe not the very essence, but at least the fun parts. very fun and hard to put down.
