How to Be a Successful Cartoonist

Review: ... When I bought Glasenbergen's book, I didn't know that it would become my most cherished piece of literature. Not only does it have wonderful drawing tips, technical tips, and material tips; it includes dozens of profiles on favorite and little-known cartoonists, business information that most of us arrogant artists are hesitant to learn, and an added bonus: a list of syndicates and contacts to make your work known! I've used this information numerous times and the results are always positive. The reading is easy and interesting, and the examples are excellent. I now have a published comic strip in a local paper and am looking to go furthere. For the serious cartoonist, this book is a must!

Review: How to Be a Successful Cartoonist is not for folks who want to learn to draw cartoons. It assumes you already cartoon. What this book teaches is how to polish cartoons and present them for sale... and where to present them. It is for amateur cartoonists who want to become professionals.

The book is organized into 5 chapters: 1. Getting started. 2. Tools and Techniques of the Pros. 3. Developing Great Style and Characters. 4. Creating funny cartoon ideas. and 5. Turning your cartoons into cash.

Each chapter has two parts: 1) profiles of and hints from different well known cartoonists, each complete with a sample cartoon. These are interspersed with 2) questions and answers about cartooning. The two parts are separate, but they do relate... if the question is about computer generated cartoons, the cartoonist profiled is one who uses computers to produce his cartoons, and a description of how he does it is attached to the sample cartoon.

The book is good in itself, but I'd say its greatest strength is its many references to other resources. It tells you where to find the right materials. It tells you how to find markets. It gets you started in the right direction for everything you need, from paper to syndicates.

If you already do cartoons and are serious about becoming a professional cartoonist, but don't know where to start, this is the book for you.
