Summary: Nice Hardcover Edition...
Review: A nice hardcover edition of this book with lots of explanations about the making and good full color illustrations. I liked the section on the CG. It's definately worth the price and could be used as a good coffee table book or such.

Summary: Sure, the writing stinks- but who would buy it for writing?
Review: Hayao Miyazaki, is, pure and simple, one of the few truly admirable artists who you can admire as both a master of his medium AND a man. His, kind, caring nature show through in every movie he's ever made. From the beauty of Totoro to the romance of Porco Rosso, this is a man who shows human nature for what it is: stubborn and egotistical, yet still beautiful and lovely. Princess Mononoke was no exception, and arguably, it was one of his best. This was in no small part due to it's breathtaking animation. The sheer physical beauty and detail, right down to the smallest things like rushing water, were wonderfully drawn. That's what makes this book, a hardbound collection of background paintings, cel drawings, storyboards and more, worth it. The writing is hideous yes, but really, does it matter. The beauty of Miyazaki's vision is what shines through, and ultimately, what makes this book worth a million. Certaintly, forty dollars is acceptable.

Summary: Something for your library
Review: I have been a huge fan of Hayao Miyazaki ever since I saw "My Neighbor Totoro" many years back. Since then, I've been getting my hands on any kind of merchandise, collectibles and have been going more and more into Studio Ghibli (Thankfully Disney is dubbing most Ghibli films into English for U.S. release, and too bad all of them have been delayed for countless months. Laputa, where I saw the sub and the Disney dub at a film festival, still needs a release date, and Kiki and Mononoke were both delayed).

Hayao Miyazaki is a master storyteller and visionary, which is why this book is the perfect companion to the biggest Japanese moneymaker (until Titanic came along) of all time, Princess Mononoke. The film is a masterpiece. The art is so extradoniary that nothing so vivid or detailed can be produced in a live action movie. The story really gets you thinking, about how man and nature must work together in order for both to survive.

This hardcover book is tremendous. It has a Studio Ghibli history, plus, it's broken down scene by scene with storyboards, pictures and a lot more. There's even a section on computer images, and how and when they were put into the film.

If you have seen the movie and enjoyed it, or at least enjoyed the visionary style, you truly need to pick yourself up a copy of this book. If you're a Miyazaki, anime or art fan, this quite a good book for you too. It'll capture your imagination for hours and hours on end.

Summary: Wonderfully detailed book on the film
Review: I rencently saw the US version of Princess Mononoke, and I was blown away by the animation and the plot. Shortly afterward I went Christmas shopping, and saw this book. I became very interested in it by just flipping the pages and noticing how it not only discribes the animation but also gives background as to what the cells are depicting. I was also very impressed by each of the poems on the characters in the movie at the beginning of the book.

I liked the book so much that I picked up two: one for my brother and one for myself.

If you've seen the movie and want to know more about its production or thoughts from the creator, I highly suggest that you get this book. It will illuminate you on how the movie evolved and will remind you why it is so very special.

Summary: Beautiful.
Review: I saw this movie when the dubbed version came out in theatres. I had never been a fan of Japanese animation beofre, but after I saw this movie, all my misconceptions were blown away. Unfortunately, it took a long time to come out on video, so to pass the time, I bought this book. It is a great coffee table and conversation piece, and the pictures chosen are beautiful. My only problem with this book was the captions that described the pictures. Since they were based on the original Japanese and not the dub, there were a few small facts that were differing and served to confuse me. Yet that is a very small problem. All in all, a good book.

Summary: Beautiful, but lacking depth...
Review: I was hoping for some anecdotal tidbits from the making of the film to be interspersed throughout the book- it is only artwork with plot descriptions until the end, when the computer graphics are discussed. Still a great coffee-table book, but not that interesting...
