Summary: Rolling on the floor funny
Review: All too few books/comics/films/tv shows/whatever still have the nerve to pull out all the stops, & make your laugh 'til you shriek, laugh 'til you could yourself an injury.

Barry Ween, bless his foul-mouth tuchus, is one of them.

Dammit! I wanted a Death Ray at his age!

Buy this!

Summary: Extremely Funny
Review: Barry Ween is one of the funniest books I've read in the last few years. There were several points where I nearly stopped breathing from laughter. Barry Ween is a Boy Genius. His friend, Jeremy, has a knack for getting into trouble. Mostly Barry gets Jeremy out of trouble. This series has brilliantly funny humor. Barry's vocabulary is very R-rated though. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Summary: One of the funniest mini-series ever published
Review: Finally reprinting the hard-to-find mini-series, Judd proves once again he's one of the most hilarious writers out there. While the art cannot compare to many other books for detail, it is the perfect style for this. All three stories are rude, crude, and downright gut-bustingly funny. This is definately a must have for anyone who has even mildly enjoyed the more-obtainable "Barry Ween 2.0", any Kevin Smith books or movies, "Milk and Cheese", or MTV's "The Real World", as Judd was a cast member for one season.

Summary: Essential Comic Shelf Book
Review: God Bless Barry! I've read it, re-read it and just got done reading it for the third time. One of the best, laugh out loud, comics I have ever come across in my twenty something years of reading comics. The sequel trade is even better and the thrid series, being published as I write this, is just as funny as BW2.0, maybe even more so. Judd is the MAN!

Summary: I'm a "Ween-ie" for Life....
Review: I decided to try this book out on the unqualified recommendation of Comic Buyer's Guide columnist Tony Isabella. Dee and I were at Mid-Ohio Con's pre-convention party at the Laughing Ogre, and so, on a lark and with some dough to blow, I picked it up and took it back to the hotel with me.

Damn Tony and his calculating, seductive ways! He KNEW that I would become a "Weenie" and would immediately be scouring the convention for the next two volumes.... of which only "2.0" was available. But like a junkie in need of a fix, I scarped it up and, late that night, kept Dee awake with my incessant laughing and reading aloud nearly every passage. You can't help but read this stuff out loud, the book practically talks by itself.

When I was finished, I got that terrific feeling again, the feeling I got when I first experienced Jeff Smith's BONE, or Brian Michael Bendis' first Ultimate Spider-Man, or when Frank Miller gave new meaning to both Daredevil and Batman, or when a young neophyte from Canada named John Byrne launched a career I officially mark with his first writing and drawing gig on the last issue of Charlton's SPACE:1999. This, this is why I love comics and the people who make them. This is indeed a boom year for great comics, and every now and again, you find something that seems to transcend the medium. I wish only great things for Judd Winick and I'm climbing the walls waiting to see where he's taking Barry, Jeremy, and Sara next.

Summary: Einstein... Aristotle... Da Vinci... MORONS.
Review: I picked up an issue of Barry Ween 2.0 a while back on a lark, and discovered one of the funniest, most profane works of illustrated literature I've ever experienced. I started hunting for back issues, and happened upon this trade paperback that contains the entire first mini-series.

Although it's in black-and-white, and the renderings are relatively simple and cartoonish, 'Barry Ween' still ranks as one of my all-time fave reads. In this instance, the quality or detail of the artwork is not necessarily the most important part of the comic book. Writer-artist Judd Winick seems to have had the time of his life crafting the strange adventures and hilarious predicaments of a conceited, foul-mouthed ten-year-old with an IQ of 350. From closing an interdimensional rift in the basement, to rescuing classmates from terrorists in an art museum, to changing his best friend into a dinosaur & back to a human, ol' Bar' never seems to catch a break...

If you're into 'South Park' at all, you'll likely be entertained by 'Barry Ween: Boy Genius' as well. Both have the crude, obscenity-laden humor that takes no prisoners. I found myself laughing aloud at several of the more wretched moments contained within the confines of this tome. Which might have explained why that comic shop guy yelled at me to buy the book or get the hell out of the store...

Summary: Adventures of a Boy Genius Written by a Comic Genius
Review: Judd Winick is a rising star in the comic book/graphic novel arena. His book, The Adventures of Barry Ween, Boy Genius is one of the funniest graphic novels that I have read in years. Biting sarcasm, dead-on movie spoofs, great writing & nice (but rather primitive) artwork combine to make this a five-star collection. As the cover blurb from Garth Ennis says, think Calvin & Hobbes on drugs. My only caution is that there is some rather vulgar language in the book, so it is not appropriate for young children.

Summary: How the West was Weened...
Review: Just like the first Barry Ween TPB, artist/writer Judd Winick's trademark cartoonish artwork, outlandish situations, and profane & witty banter between characters makes for some great entertainment beyond the traditional Superhero and action titles. In this collection, the titular hero repairs the downed vessel of a stranded alien who's on the run from space mobsters, makes an accidental trip to the Wild West, and rescues his best friend Jeremy from a secret government facility that wants to use the boy genius to further their own ends.

I've found the humor to be similar to (though a bit more down-to-earth than) the sick animated series "South Park". If you're into the antics of those four lovable foulmouthed scamps from Colorado on the small screen, I'm pretty certain you'll also enjoy the adventures of a lovable foulmouthed ten-year-old genius and his somewhat naïve and horny classmate in illustrated print. And if you do enjoy this serving, don't hesitate to check out the first Barry Ween TPB as well! (=)
