Summary: Great story but only a precursor for what is to come
Review: While it is not absolutely critical to read the Hobbit in order to enjoy the greatest work of fantasy ever written, The Lord of the Rings trilogy, the Hobbit does provide valuable background information on the later quest. The character development is top notch and the book is a very quick read. Tolkien's ingenuity in creating a time and place is surpassed by none. The one odd thing I noticed is that it appears that the Lord of the Rings was written for a more mature audience than the Hobbit. All that being said, I find myself re-reading the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings every two to three years with the same amount of enjoyment and a growing appreciation each time.

Summary: Get in to the book
Review: This book is about a hobbit named Bilbo Baggins. He takes up an adventure with thirteen dwarves and a wizard named Grandelf. He is supposed to help the dwarves win back their treasure and mountain! This book tells about their adventures and the risks they take! I think the author wanted to enchant the reader because the book has suspense at every turn! I like this book because it has suspense and adventure. I think you would really like this book!

Summary: Not just for children!
Review: I always thought this book was for children so I got it for my son for Christmas. He had read all the Harry Potter books and was waiting for the next one so I figured this classic fantasy would help fill the void.

Well fill the void it did! My son absolutely loved it and has already read through it twice. Intrigued, I picked up the book myself and was immediately captivated by the story and stayed up until 2AM one morning to finish it! This is a book that any adult can appreciate and while it might be challenging for a child under 14, the effort will be rewarded.

This is the story of a hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, who is very much like many of us. He would rather avoid "adventure" and sit by the fireplace with a mug of beer and a good meal in his stomach. He is suddenly dragged unwittingly into an adventure that ends up transforming him and teaching him things about himself that he never knew.

As Bilbo and his dwarf companions encounter trolls, goblins, giant spiders and ultimately a giant dragon in their quest to recover lost treasure, you will find it increasingly difficult to put the book down.

J.R.R. Tolkien is a master of prose and you find yourself reading paragraphs over again to absorb all the rich detail. They sure don't write them like that anymore!

I highly recommend getting this book on tape (or CD) as well. My son and I "re-read" the book this way and we gained much more appreciation for this timeless classic (the medieval music added a whole new dimension to the tale).

Summary: THIS IS FANTASY I LIKED
Review: I am not a fantasy/sci-fi reader, and I did not overly enjoy Tolkien's extreme run-on sentences. I admit that I had to read more carefully. But aside from those issues...I Love This Book! Tolkien talks directly to the reader, interrupting himself every now and then to define a term, give a background fact, and sometimes to show the reader just how anxious he is to tell us the ending before we get there! Pictures are easily created. Puns are very intented. Characters are realistic in their personalities and traits. Any reader who gives the book a chapter's chance will become involved in Bilbo's adventure of a lifetime.

Summary: An Excellent, Adventurous Book Worthy of being a "Classic."
Review: The Hobbit is an excellent book. It is written by JRR Tolkien who has a good taste for writting well.

Through many troubles, the dwarves, led by Bilbo the Hobbit, go over the Misty Mountains, through the Mirkwood Forest, out of the hands of the goblins and the forest elves all the way to Lonely Mountain. Then they have a showdown with the evil dragon Smaug...

Will they recover their lost treasure and old mountain home, or will they lose their lives?

Summary: I've seen MUCH better writing by BEGINNING authors.
Review: I know for a fact that there are several of Hobbit fans. Though personally, I hated the first book and the entire series. Most of these people who've reviewed books by Robert Jordan, claim that his series is just another set of stories based on the writing of the Tolkien series. Many of my friends seem to agree with me that this story was a total bliss. Bilbo is a Hobbit who seems not to do much in the story. Of course, the whole meaning of him being their, is to keep the story revolving around a world of addiction. The ending of the story is horrible and it seems that Tolkien wasted his POOR and SENSELESS usage of his brain. No offense, but the suspense was not at all amusing and you felt as if you wanted the book to end on the first page. Bilbo practically does nothing to defeat the vicious (funny word to use here), dragon, Smaug. Surely this book was a waste of energy. The intricate details which are suppose to consist within this "story" are no where to be seen. The book does not unwind itself to a twisting and strange plot, but clearly a purposeless one. I despise and loathe this series tremendously. Bilbo is not exactly the character which you would find addicted to. He stammers and is basically a coward. Dwarves. Now where have I heard this word babled by little five year olds? Oh, that's right, Snow White and the Seven DWARVES! For the dwarves in the story, remind you very much of the ones in the Disney classic. Idiotic and Irritating. This book is a story of your everyday savior (supposedly Bilbo) having adventures and slaying a dragon. So it's like your medieval classics of a prince saving his beloved, only with a more dull and tasetless...yawn. Excuse me. Just remembering that I read the book makes me just faint in exhaustion. What was I drinking when I decided to read this piece of junk? And like all stories, there are monsters and strange happenings. Flipping through the pages, the words "been there, done that," echoes through your crying mind. Crying because the story will NOT END! Agghhh! Gandalf the wizard is a bogus, he does absolutely nothing that would benefit to anything worth mentioning. Come to think of it, Bilbo reminds me of a pig. Small, always desiring food, foolish, cowardly, lazy...I can go on forever. Also, the series is quite poorly written. The words used remind me of the time when I picked up my first book around the age of four. Take my word for it, this is not the sort of book which makes you read till past your regular bedtime. One more things on the dwarves. They are useless characters and this story makes me want to vomit. No originality whatsoever is involved and the pages make me wish I was not even in existence. There you have it. I wouldn't even give this book a star, but since that was not an option, I had to settle for a WHOLE star. I'm just glad this guy's dead. :)

Summary: A charming tale
Review: Even though I prefer The Lord of the Rings and the Silmarillion to The Hobbit, I find that this book is one of the great masterpieces in children's literature. It is written in a beautiful but simple prose and is a great read for all ages. I will give it an enthusiastic five stars.

Summary: The Hobbit
Review: Do you like action packed novels bursting with surprises? If you do, you'll love The Hobbit, written by J.J. R. Tolkien. This novel is full of suspense, peril, and adventure. You don't know what will happen next. Mr. Baggins (Bilbo), a hobbit, has a variety of adventures from being assaulted by trolls to being trapped in a cave. The adventure starts when a magical wizard meets Bilbo offering him adventure that he politely refuses, only to find himself tagging along the next day. Bilbo finds that the adventure he has been assigned to is full of peril, and he desires more than once that he could be back in his comfortable hobbit hole. Accompanying him on his adventure are thirteen dwarfs. The dwarfs get into more trouble than Bilbo himself, and he saves their lives more than once. Gandalf (the wizard) helps them on their way, but only for a short while because he also has business that must be taken care of. I would give this book five stars, because it's very well thought out and was written well. If you like books with many twists and turns, not knowing what will happen next, then you will like this book. I loved it!
