Summary: An enchanting prelude!
Review: The Hobbit is a great piece of fantasy that introduces us to a fabulous world. I haven't read the rest of the series yet, but I soon hope to at them..I have so many books to read!

J.R.R. Tolkein is obviously one of the true fantasy masters of all time and has accomplished an achievement with this series that not many writers shall ever conquer! He's truly wonderful!

Summary: I great read if you are open-minded...
Review: When I heard that the trilogy that follows this novel, The Lord of the Rings, was being made into a movie and that Tolkien's books are some of the greatest literary works of all time, I bought LOTR and The Hobbit.

Let me say this: The Hobbit (and Lord of the Rings for that matter) is not for everyone. One of The Hobbit's greatest aspects (or worst, depending on how you see it) are the vivid details of the scenery Tolkien provides the reader. This makes the reader feel as if he/she is in Middle-Earth as part of the party of 13 dwarves, one hobbit and a wizard. You experience everything the group does, and they do go through a lot. The downfall of this style is it may seem slow and boring to some, but not to me.

Some say that there is not enough charcter development or that the plot is too thin. I beg to disagree. While there are many pages of wandering around Middle-Earth and descriptions of its locales, the plot moves at a fair pace with a main event present in every chapter. As for those who say that character development is non-existant in the novel must have skipped quite a few chapters. Do they not realise that the main character, Bilbo Baggins, goes through a tremendous change? At the very beginning of the book he has very little desire for adventure. He does not think of himself as brave or bold or resourceful. By the final pages of The Hobbit, he has become all the things he didn't believe he was.

After reading this tale of travel and adventure, I now agree with those who say that this is the greatest literary works of the century. If you are open-minded and like fantasy in general or like the Star Wars saga, you should look into this book. And if you enjoyed reading this book you will also enjoy Tolkien's Lord of the Rings trilogy. Finally, this is a great novel that is well worth your money, every cent of it.

Summary: the book to read before lord of the rings
Review: if you plan on reading LOTR than you should read this great book before you read it.

Summary: A Classic
Review: This is one of the best books that I have ever read. I am not a big fan of the fantasy genre, but this book is amazing. Once you pick this book up, you will not want to put it down.

Summary: Great.
Review: The first time I read this book was when I was nine years old. I hated it.

The second time was last week, at the age of nineteen. The first thing I noticed about "The Hobbit" was that, to start with, it was surprisingly childish. Not surprising, as it is a childrens' story. However, athough I have never read Lord of theRings, I could sense something bigger behind the story. It was inexorable. Towards the end of the story, the tone changes dramaically (around Chapter 14). Quickly, the language becomes almost biblical in style, eg: "Thorin bent his horn bow and fired an arrow at Dale; it smote in his shield and stuck there quivering". The juvenile language all but vanishes, and a grand epic feel is created. The character of Thorin is most memorable. This is a masterpiece.

Summary: The ONLY Book I TRULY Enjoy Reading
Review: As far as fantasy books go, this is the best one yet (that I have read). The Hobbit, one of J. R. R. Tolkien's masterpiece works, is clearly one of the most amazing pieces of literature ever dreamed up. It is extremely well thought out and written. Now any time my parents go tell me to read I think I will go pick u The Hobbit and read over and over again. After I finished The Hobbit I rushed out to chapters and bought the next novel in the series, The Fellowship of the Rings. After only reading the first couple of chapters I can see that this will truly be another great adventure to read.

The Hobbit is the ultimate fantasy book of all time. It starts out by a very mysterious and powerful wizard by the name of Gandalf passing by Bilbo's (The Hobbit) house. Somehow the wizard despite Bilbo's eagerness to get rid of him gets invited back for tea the next day. However before the wizard shows up, a band of dwarves arrive at Bilbo's door. Then when Gandalf arrives Bilbo is informed of what all these dwarves are present for. He has been selected by Gandalf to assist these dwarves in retrieving a stolen treasure, dwarves gold. He becomes the burglar of the band of dwarves. He is the one that must figure out how to steal back the stolen treasure from an evil and incredibly dangerous dragon Smaug. At first the dwarves have no confidence in Bilbo; they do not believe that he will be able to do what Gandalf says he will. Gandalf you see have a great deal of confidence in Bilbo, this will prove to be a very wise decision. It will be a very perilous journey or the dwarves and Bilbo. Along the way many hard-ships will occur, this will prove to be training for Bilbo; it also convinces the dwarves that Bilbo will indeed be able to retrieve the treasure for them. As for the rest of the book you will have to read it to find out what happens in the end.

Summary: This book will stay in your heart forever...
Review: My personal feeling is that not many books in literature today even come close to the adventure contained in the Hobbit. 'The Hobbit' has everything from the magic of wizards to the bravery of knights to the simplicity of Bilbo Baggins, the hobbit. The culmination of this book at the battle of five armies as a backdrop for the slaying of a giant dragon named smog is untouched by any book I have ever read since. This story sets the table for J.R.R.Tolkien's opus trilogy 'The Lord of the Rings' which is a masterpeice in itself. When I first read the hobbit many years ago it captured me for days and still a part of my heart today resides in 'Middle Earth'. I think you will feel the same way when you read this great story. It's truly magical. A really great one indeed.

Summary: An Excellent Read
Review: I read this book for a project in highschool, and fell in love with it after the first chapter. By now, I've read it more times than I can count.

Summary: A Classic!
Review: What can someone say about "the hobbit" that has not already been said. I remember first reading this book when I was twelve and not being able to put it down. I read it three times in a row, each time being more thrilled with the book. I wanted to change my cats name to Bilbo (my mom said no). This is the best fantasy story, ever written in my opinion. About two weeks ago I found my 15-year-old son reading the Hobbit. I went and dug up my old copy and fell in love with the book all over again. This book is a must have for anyone's home library. One of my favorite parts is the riddle game between Gollum and Bilbo (what's its got in its pocket?). There is so much to explore and discover in this book. You'll figure something else out each time you read it. So do yourself a favor pick up a copy and escape into a world of lovable characters and high adventure!

Summary: Engrossing, enjoyable, a must-read for everyone
Review: This is certainly one of the best books I have ever read. Although intended for a young audience, I think it certainly can appeal to just about everyone. While the plot is simple in nature, Tolkien does an excellent job of description and character development. A truly great book that will remain a classic for years to come.
