Summary: What is past
Review: Welcome to another world- a world of myth and fantasy where things happen that are quite unexpected and... But no! True, this is a world of myth and fantasy, but it is not another world I speak of. It is our own world in another time- a time long ago, near forgotten save by a few, a time when elves walked the earth and small, manlike creatures called hobbits lived in holes in the ground, when dragons flew through the blue skies and orcs infested the mountains. Welcome to the Hobbit

Summary: Greatest adventure story ever told!
Review: Tolkien at his best! Master story teller J.R.R. Tolkien (John Ronald Reuel Tolkien) has created a compelling tale with a fast-page turning efffect. The Hobbit tells a story of long forgotten races of beings in an imaginary time and place. Particularly of a lonely hobbit named Bilbo Baggins, who dicurages an adventure of any kind, but ends up finding himself on an endless journey fighting giant spiders, man-eating goblins, and fire-breathing dragons. I highly recomend this book to fantasy readers of all ages. A must read

Summary: The Hobbit unlocks the secret to reading Tolkien.
Review: The Hobbit is the first to a series of five books on Middle Earth. After I read The Hobbit, I just had to get hold of the trilogy, The Lord of the Rings. The language is clear, simple, yet passionate and definitely romantic. The road to Middle Earth is laid before the reader; all he has to do is take it. The journey, it would seem, ends with the boat to beyond the sea in the 3d volume but to fully claim a share in Tolkien's Middle Earth is to go back to the 'history' of this magical world. Tolkien provides such a history in a 5th book which is just as, or even more, magical than the first four books. And to think that this fantastic journey deep into Middle Earth (and into one's own magic) starts with the road just outside the steps of a small hobbit hole in The Hobbit

Summary: A book to grow up with
Review: I first read the Hobbit as a young boy. This book more so than any other that I read as a child opened my mind to the vastness of humanities imagination. The purity of J.R.R. Tolkiens fantasy allows the reader to become totally immersed in the fantasy and adventures of Mr. Bilbo Baggins, Esquire. From Dragons to Wizards the reader develops a sense of comraderie with the characters as the overcome foes and their own fears and failings. Now as a father of four children I have taken each one of my kids into this wonderful world. As each of my childred reached the age of five I would carefully tuck them in and then together we would imbark upon this most amazing adventure. Re-reading this book every five years or so has only brought closer to the characters and the story itself. But perhaps the greatest joy is seeing the excited look on the face of my child as Bilbo first tricks the Trolls or when he first steals the ring of Gollum in the caves of the Goblins and certainly the climatic event of the burglary into the den of the sleeping Smaug, the dragon who awaits all of them under the mountain. This is a book rich with adventure and fantastic episodes like no other. Truly this is a book to grow up with and I would venture to say -- to stay young with through the eyes of a child.

Summary: Fantastic illistrations breathe life into the story.
Review: "The Hobbit" is the greatest novel ever penned. With characters you feel like you've always known and a plot full of mischief, you won't be able to put the book down until it's finished. Filled with wonderful illustrations, this edition of Tolkien's masterpiece breathes life to the story in a most unbelievable way; the characters are vivacious and the colors grab your eye creating an excellent blend of imagination visual stimulation. On a scale of one-to-ten, "The Hobbit" is a resounding TEN. You cannot read better fiction!

Summary: Wonderful from one generation to another.
Review: Tolkien has created a land for all of us to escape to.Easy to read and simple to understand, his smooth soft prose easily slips into the harsh gutteral noise of an Orc or baddy. His poetry is introduced with such natural transition that even the "roses are red" crowd will enjoy. This classic is a perfect way to introduce your type A friend to relaxing fantacy literature that will trap them until you're ready for them to direct you to the next project. I enjoyed it immensely and was excited to give it to my children. Already it is a favorite that will be passed on to the next generation. It is a timeless masterpiece

Summary: An adventure any adventurer would be jealose of!
Review: "The Hobbit" is like those little adventures that you used to create in you mind as a child. Only this is MUCH bigger than that. With dragons, dwarves, hobbits, elves, wizards and more, even the non-imaginative person would love this tale. And with the vivid descriptions Mr. Tolkien added, even the non-imaginative could easily see in his/her mind what was happening to the little hobbit. I'm not giving away the story, just trying to say why I think that this tale is the best

Summary: Extraordinary peak in to Tolkien's Middle-earth!
Review: This fantanstic romp through the wonders of Middle-earth provides a tremendous sense of adventure that only Tolkien can offer. This is an easy-to-read preview of what lay ahead in the Lord of the Rings. A must read for any avid Fantasy reader

Summary: A MUST read for all fantasy fans!
Review: I take time to read this book and the following Tolkien Trilogy "Lord of the Rings" about every two years and each time I am swept away just like the first time. The characters have distinct and passionate personalities both good and evil. Each time through, I am thrust into a world of magnificent lands, strange and unusual races, and fantastic battles between good and evil. From Smog, to Gandalf, to Bilbo and Gollum the surprises never cease. Once I pick the book up, I can't put it down. By the way, it's about time I read it again.
