Summary: Hayao Miyazaki is only compared to Akira Kurosawa....
Review: Nausicca is probably Miyazaki's best work (and well known). It belongs with such works as Watchmen, Batman:DKR, and Kingdom Come. The sheer scale of the artwork is amazing- Miyazaki has about 11 panels per page (when the average is 6 panels), and he was also working non-stop on his animation. The Manga differs from the Anime drastically, where in the Manga Miyazaki portrays humanity as a destructive and evil force. He shows his true thoughts on Humanity in general (it will prepare you for the upcoming Mononoke Hime). A masterpiece that will never fade with time, and should be compared to Lord of the Rings, and Dune. (do not see the Warriors of Wind- it is a piece of garbage that was thoroughly hacked to death by American film editors)

Summary: Tolkein meets Herbert...
Review: I feel having read the Lord of the Rings, and the Dune series, was preparation of sorts to reading Nausicaa. The details of the characters, the religion, and the world in general are immense. Where Nausicaa differs from most novels is in its ability to show the horror of war, humanities stupidity and how even in her darkest hour mankind still has hope in that of our children. Nausicaa should not be missed by any fans of fantasy, sci-fi, or just good books in general.

Summary: Equal to Tolken's Lord of the Rings
Review: I bought the individual comics when Viz. published them. Unlike most comics, which seem to feature scantily clad people with no plot other than one fight scene after another, Nausicaa will make you think. It is one of the few comics that I take out every once in a while to re-read.
The art work is great, and the plot with all of the political intrigue and character development made me look forward to each issue.
Now that the comic is now collected in these volumes, I highly recommend Nausicaa for anyone who thinks that comics are "just for kids" - you will not be disappointed.

Summary: Tre translator comments
Review: I've worked on over 20,000 pages of manga, and Nausicaa is one of the two best I've ever translated (the other is Katsuhiro Otomo's "Domu," available from Dark Horse Comics). Dana Lewis and I really put our hearts into this translation, and I hope it shows (Volumes 3 and up were superbly translated by Matt Thorn).

Summary: *** Highest possible recommendation ***
Review:

Like a few other classics, this is a Great Book disguised as pop entertainment. To understand the mythic charisma of a leader who inspires - and earns - unreserved worship; for whose cause one would fight to dedicate - or give - one's life, read these gripping little tales of Princess Nausicaa's battles to save the inhabitants (ALL the inhabitants - treacherous enemies, deformed mutants, giant bugs, and bioengineered battle-monsters no less than little children) of the future from war and ecological collapse, tales which combine the highest levels of action and excitement with values of simple humanity under horrific stress.

Should be required reading for every citizen of our time!

Summary: Probably the best serious work in graphic novel format
Review: From the best known animator outside the US. Miyazaki is never a comic artist, in fact, Nausicaa is his only work in graphic novel format. While the backdrop of the story, a post-appocolyptic portrayal of a world very much like our own but not quite exactly earth, is hardly original, Miyazaki has a lot of surprises in store for his readers. I don't want to spoil the fun for any potential readers. Nevertheless, this is something I can say. Nausicaa is a serious science fiction work, with very rich and engrossing details. The characters are well developed and very likable in ways you won't find in many post-appocolyptic stories. Despite a rather moody background, the story is not as dark as you might expect from a book of this type. Finally, true to his origin, Miyazaki delivers top quality art in his books.

Summary: A Graphic Novel Masterpiece
Review: I was drawn to this book as a fan of the U.S.-released anime Warriors of the Wind. While I am used to video adaptations not living up to the quality of the printed form, I was unprepared for the brilliance of this graphic novel. The characters are truly involving, the political and ecological backgrounds complex, and the action sequences are exceptional. Following the complexities of the plot is not for read-on-autopilot types; this novel requires some thought. The artwork is accessable, not artsy-obscure, although some of the panels are so busy as to be almost cluttered. There are many levels to this work, and I learn more about it on each re-reading. I became so attached to this story that I can't wait to get the other volumes in this collection. This is a thoughtful, intelligent, and soulful work, far above the slash-and-trash mentality of so many other graphic novels. This is truly a work with heart, an evident labor of love
