After all, the strip simply described the ups and downs of a suburban family, nothing more, nothing less. But yet, as this first collection of strips prove, FoxTrot was not just another fun little strip about a stereotype family- the Fox clan here was anything but stereotypes, actually, as Amend wisely decided to give each family member a distinct identity rather than just throw them in situations with humor potential, like many other strips tend to do.Even though Amend would later develop a formula for the cartoon that was probably just a bit too predictable, here there are little indications of a formula, even if the characters would hardly change over the next fifteen years. Roger was the father/husband and the breadmaker of the group, and he had a small tendency to make a fool of himself (check out the set of strips where he attempts to lead a laptop computer seminar, yet he doesn't even know how to turn a computer on). Andy (short for Andrea) was the mother/housewife of the clan, and while she made sure Roger and the children were kept in place, she was still not the ideal parent; for instance, she was often unable to motivate herself when on her own. Peter, the older son/brother, was a high school junior who had virtually no luck finding a date, let alone a girlfriend (surprised? Well, this scenario changes by the end of the book). Paige, the lone daughter/sister, was a high school freshman who, like Peter, also had little hope of finding a date, and was often picked on by younger brother Jason. Fifth-grader Jason was decidedly the nerd of the bunch, as he would practically die without a computer, but could live happily ever after without athletic sports and girls. And as for the strips themselves? Well, as far as this set goes, they remain fresh for the most part- perhaps a little naive every now and then, but consistently funny from start to finish. Some fans may be a little surprised that the drawings are a little raw and unpolished, but such a complaint is irrelevant when the strips are funny. That's why any diehard fan of FoxTrot should consider having this book in their FoxTrot memorabilia, as it clearly depicts the origins of some of the most memorable characters in the history of the comic strip.

I wasn't alive, yet, more importanly, FoxTrot first was printed in newspapers. A phenom that will hopefully live on for many more years On with the review: Bill Amend's first book is a truely awesome work of "art" coming from the brain of a physics major. Unlike the early years of Garfield, (or "classic" Heathcliff) the number of cheap laughs in this book is reduced to single digits. There, not-so-suprisingly, are very huge artistic contrasts in the FoxTrot comics between now and 1988. There is even a change of drawing styles even inside this book, containing the first 10-11 months of FoxTrot cartoons. Even way back then, Amend (rhymes with "Raymond") still had a creative mind. In one Sunday cartoon, Roger was reading the Sunday comics; and on that fictional newspaper was the first panel of the cartoon that you were reading. In Paige's room, there was a picture of a unicorn with a little a little fairy on the ground. In the last panel...the unicorn ate the fairy!!! While Paige was at the dance, you could see the different things going on in the background. In the Fox household, there is ususally pictures of pieces of fruit, in some cartoons, the fruit, rotates, changes, or even gets eaten! Aside from all of the stupid little things, this is a wonderfully compiled book of laughs, and Amend's creativity will force you to smile. A must have!!

Foxtrot blows all other comic strips away!

If I do one thing every day, it's read this strip (Thank God for MSNBC Comics!). The interesting thing about this particular collection of Fox Trot strips is that it is the first. Therefore, it is interesting to see early physical forms of all the characters and compare those with how they look today.
