Summary: A coffee table Superman book...
Review: ...and I mean that in the best way possible. ;-)

Nice timeless story by Paul Dini wherein Superman confronts the fact that he can't save the world by himself, but let's face it: the reason to buy this book are the amazing full-page painted illustrations from Alex Ross. Beyond his trademark realism, Ross really conveys the essense of Superman's power and dignity here.

This oversized format is a terrific forum for his talents and fans of his work will be thrilled to own it.

Summary: Snore...
Review: A fantastic book, primarily because of the stunning visuals. Superman has never looked more life-like or vibrabt. this is primarily due to Alex Ross' stunning pencils and lush painting style. Ross took the comic world by storn in the early 90's with the limited series Marvels and continues to impress. this is the first of four oversized comic books. the story is not paticularly interesting, but it is clearly not the focus of this work. the point here is the art and it shows.

Summary: Fluff
Review: Alex Ross and Paul Dini are both creators that I have a lot of time for, but I could not recommend this book to anyone.

Paul Dini has obviously opted to allow the art to tell most of the story and keep the words down to a minimum, which in itself is fine, but you really need a good story there to carry it off. Unfortunately this book doesn't come close. Paul Dini has taken a huge stubject and over-simplified it into a five minute read that doesn't really grab your attention for those five minutes.

The art, being Alex Ross is extremely professional, but it lacks acertain spark that you see in most of his work, and it just serves as a reminder of why the quality of a good painter is not just down to realism - Realism alone can be quite dull.

Summary: This Book Is Super
Review: Alex Ross first attempt of the large dimensional grahpic novel. Ross' artwork does well in this bigger and bolder format as the reader becomes absorbed by the illustrations, and like a good movie, is transported into the story as if he or she is actually there. The story is every "bit" as good as the artwork.

Superman, who is virtually indestructable, must fight an opponent he can't see: world hunger. This story, filled with overtones about humanities plight in world hunger, preaches to us without being pretentious. Further, we observe Superman more as a human being since there are some things even he cannot do.

Summary: AWESOME MIXTURE OF ART & STORY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Review: Alex Ross has outdone himself (once again) with his great paintings. He brings a norman rockwell touch to the world of comics. The story by Paul Dini is great and very touching. Altho the format is a little cumbersome since it is so much bigger than a regular comic, it is still a work of true art. Also makes a great holiday gift.

Summary: Incredible!
Review: Alex Ross strikes again, and he doesn't dissapoint! No other illustrator in the comics industry comes close to posessing the kind of talent that Mr. Ross showcases again with Superman: Peace on Earth. This book is touching and moving in a way that most people would deem "comic books" incapable of. I have also just read Batman: War on Crime, and it exudes the same brilliance of artwork and story as this Superman book. Also, check out Kingdom Come! They just don't get much better than this...

Summary: simply the best
Review: Alex's story and illustrations give the Man of Tomorrow a very human quality. From Marvels to Kingdom Come, his work (even though fiction) has a certain realness, a depth that most "comics" don't have. This story is timeless and touching, without being overbearing. Loved it, loved it, loved.

Summary: Top-notch artist plus top-notch writer equals dud?
Review: Comic book fans around the world have been salivating at their retailer's counters for months after seeing ads for this dream project. Imagine, the writer who has pumped new blood into timeless icons (Batman and Superman) and the artist who brought the painted comic book into the spotlight not as an oddity but as a sight for sore eyes.

Well, guess what? The artwork by Alex Ross is, as always, stunning to see. There is a majesty he brings to his heroes, villains, and even the normal folk that litter his painted pages. Beautiful. But the story is, to say the least, remarkably bland. And so, the piece as a whole suffers.

The basic synopsis, to me anyway, is "Superman wants to end hunger. Superman can't end hunger. Oh well." It's borderline whiny. There's one scene that is an exception to the boredom and that's Big Blue's confrontation with a dictatorial government. It's tense stuff for comics.

Other than that, it's a book filled with pretty pictures. It's worth it for that, but I expected more from both creators, Dini for having written some of the most spectacular Batman stories in years, and Ross, who usually has pretentiously high standards, for going along with this sleepy tale.

Summary: One word; WHOA!
Review: First, a disclaimer; SUPERMAN; PEACE ON EARTH is a heavily illustrated novella, not a conventional comic book. It is a true graphic novel. And what a novel! What that miserable SUPERMAN IV failed to do, this film does effortlessly; so show Superman fighting a real-world tragedy.

Paul Dini's story puts the MAN in Superman. I thought that it would be overly sappy, but Big Blue's efforts to stave off world hunger were well thought out, but ultimately doomed to fail; time, circumstance, and a few powerful men who would rather see their people starve than risk losing power. This is the real world, and Paul Dini's story brings them into it.

And what can be said about the art of Alex Ross that hasn't been said before? He merges the larger than life aspects of Superman with the very real people with whom he interacts in this story. If there really was a Superman in this world, he would look like he does here. Ross has outdone the already high standards he set for himself in KINGDOM COME and MARVELS.

This story about a true SuperMAN is one of the finest things I've read in years, in any medium. Messrs. Dini and Ross, take a well-deserved bow!
