Summary: Almost perfect.
Review: I purchased this book to make up for the bitter disappointment that was Marvel Encyclopedia. The Ultimate Guide turned out to be vastly better, but still flawed. No Shocker? Why leave out someone as prominent as The Shocker, especially since he was just in the Spider-Man video game which was very successful. There are other omissions as well, for example, Tarantula. The book is too slim. It should run at least 250 pages, with perhaps a cover gallery or something. Or more information about other Spidey story-lines. I guess they're saving that for the "Expanded Edition".
Those are the main problems. The Ultimate Guide is still a great buy for Spider-Man freaks. We probably won't get anything better.

Summary: The best Spider-man book that money can buy!
Review: If you buy one Spider-man book in your life, this should be the one. It has detailed descriptions of all of Spidey's powers, friends, enemies, and even a page on Peter Parker himself. It has helpful pictures on every page to go with the text, which makes this book very enjoyable. You could just pick up this book without knowing anything about Spider-man, and you could win a trivia contest just by skimming the pages(each villain has a quick, 1-paragraph description of their names and backgrounds). The book is split into decades, showing Spider-man in the 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's, Spiderman 2000, and MUCH more. It even gives a description of how his web shooters work! I don't think that the person who wrote the review "Full of boring details...., December 6, 2003
Reviewer: A toy enthusiast from USA" knew what he/she was talking about. Spider-man books don't get more essential then this. I bought it for $20, and it was worth every cent. I hope that this review was helpful to you.

Summary: a (near) complete history.
Review: pretty good history of spider man. i recomend this book for someone who wants to start reading the comics, or who has stepped away from them for a few years. i do not recomend this book to anyone who wants a long explanation of any aspect of the world of spider-man, as most of the content in this book only scratches the surface.

Summary: A quintessential guide for Spidey fans, old and new.
Review: Since there's no "Spider-Man: for Dummies" book as yet, this is the next best thing. It gives concise but specific overviews of characters and storylines from the Spider-Man universe. Everything you ever wanted--or needed--to know is in here. Allies, villains, spin-off comic series, all of it. And nicely priced, too. What are you waiting for?? Buy it!! :)

Summary: A GOOD PLACE FOR BEGINNING WALL-CRAWLERS
Review: Spiderman - The Ultimate Guide is a very thorough and informative book. New fans of comics and people who know little about Peter Parker and his alter-ego Spiderman will find this an enjoyable read and will leave it with a strong knowledge of the 30+ year history of the character.

The book covers everything from Spidey's origin and powers to his supporting cast including Aunt May, J. Jonah Jameson, Mary Jane, and plenty more. Key points in Spiderman's adventures are also covered including: the Death of Gwen Stacy, the Alien Costume, the mystery of the Hoblgoblin, and the Clone Saga. Villains and vigilantes are also reviewed like: Green Goblin, The Vulture, Sandman, Electro, Venom, Carnage, and several minor characters that you might not expect to see included in a 170 page book.

The Ultimate Guide also mentions alternate creations of Spiderman like Spiderman 2099 and The Ultimate Spiderman (my personal favorite).

If DeFalco's Guide does have a weak spot it's that many entries have captions and paragraphs that simply reiterate the same material. With two pages of information on a character this can become annoying to read the same fact three times in such a short space. Also a personal gripe of mine is that sometimes laughable characters like The Rocket Racer were included while a more common classic villain like The Shocker was overlooked. Instead of pages devoted to Will O The Wisp and Silvermane, I would have much rather preferred a more indepth look at some of the runs of Spiderman stories and the various plots they dealt with...alas maybe in Ultimate Guide #2 (hint).

All in all I recommend this book for anyone who wants to learn about the incredible character of Spiderman before the movie premieres on May 3, 2002.

Summary: This really is the Ultimate guide
Review: This book was awesome! The illustrations and pictures were the best I've seen in a long time. It also was a very informative book. I learned more things about Spider-Man in this one book than in any other single book. It also contained very informative timelines and thumbnai pictures. I especially enjoyed the Spider-Man costumes column. This book even has blue prints for Spider-Man's web shooters! This book was very detailed and carried origins for each and every villain. I recommend this book to all who like Spider-man and want to learn more about him, or even if you know a lot and just to learn the details. This was an all around great book!
