Summary: Can you get me some decent villians please?
Review: Ugh, in this book we see Millar basically sully two of the best villian in the X-Men universe.
Sabretooth is turned into a [weak] Wolverine [copy]. He is even called a poor man's wolverine. That is no way to treat the guy who could in the cannon comic fight wolverine to stand still. In fact, I don't even believe that the character depicted here is Sabretooth, from now on he will be refered to as Dog Breath (see my Ultimate X-Men review to learn about Dog Breath).
Secondly.... wtf did Millar do to Juggernaut? He is just some big dumb MUTANT meat head. Where is the Ruby Gem of Cytorak? Where is his connection to Professor Xavier? Where is "Nothing Stops the Juggernaut"? Christ... I know Millar wanted to toss in recognizable X-villians in the Weapon X program, but why did he have to destroy a great X-villian to do it? He could have just tossed in Unus the Untouchable or one of the Mauraders (namely Blockbuster is he wanted a super strong character). But no, he had to bastardize one of the premier X-villians. You know what, I refuse to acknowledge that character as Juggernaut, he is now known as Dog Breath II.
Okay, besides the fact that Millar completely [messed] up two of the greatest X-villians of all time, this isn't a horrible read. I liked Nightcrawler, and it was cool to see Rogue sans Ms. Marvel powers. Most of all, I loved Fury. The opening scene where is parashoes in is just too classic for words. In this arc he truly is Marvel's James Bond.
All in all, a neat read. But it is becoming aparent that while Millar's revamps of the X-Men is good, his revamps of thier villians is suffering. We had Magneto the sociopath, Dog Breath the Wolverine Wanna-Be, and Dog Breath II the big dumb meat head. The only decent villian I have seen was Wraith, who A) wasn't an X-Men villian and B) is dead.
Of course Millar could redeme himself by having Wraith turn out to be Mystique or something cool like that. But I doubt he'd do that. Anyway, as I said, read this book for the X-Men, not the villians.

Summary: Move On.
Review: Ultimate X-Men has not been such a spectacular book as everyone says it has been. Why, you ask? Because of Mark Millar. Mark Millar is the writer of Ultimate X-Men and even he has admitted that he could have done a better job on this book if he had given it his all. He didn't exert 100% of his great writing skills on the first story arc of Ultimate X-Men because he was writing something else that he was much more interested in called "The Ultimates." (Pick up "The Ultimates" trade or hardcover if it's available for Millar's best work.) Because he was more interested in writing the other book, the first part of Ultimate X-Men (Ultimate X-Men: The Tomorrow People) wasn't that great, but wasn't that bad, either.

However, he didn't exert 100% of his respectable writing skills on Ultimate X-Men: Return To Weapon X for an entirely different reason -- Mark Millar was in the hospital for the months when he was writing this second arc. He could only type with one arm on an old typewriter as drugs kept on entering his body to sedate the pain he felt. How do you think the story turned out? Poorly written, that's how.

Want to see the best X-Men ever? Check out New X-Men by Grant Morrison. Forget all that Claremont and Millar X-Men stuff.

This is not a knock at Millar. He is a great writer...I just think that someone better could have been picked to write Ultimate X-Men. His Ultimate X-Men run hasn't been good up until the Proteus saga, which was bogged down by bad art.

Summary: If you like X2, you'll like this.
Review: Ultimate X-Men: Return to Weapon X is the second story arc of Ulitmate X-Men. The story starts as the terrorist group, Weapon X, kidnaps the teleporter Nightcrawler and forces him to work along with other mutant victims Rogue and Juggarnaut (who has a strange, new costume.) A few weeks later, Cyclops, Storm, and Colossus are in Tokyo being interviewed on a talk show. Following orders, Rogue secretly absorbs Colossus's memories and leads Weapon X to the Xavier Institute. The X-Men are abducted and forced to be Weapon X agents. This graphic novel is obviously what X2: X-Men United was based on. There are many similarties like Weapon X creating a Cerebro copy, Iceman visting his parents, and the X-Men teaming up with the Brotherhood of Mutants. The only bad thing about this book is the characters. Jaggurnaut was pulled out from out of nowhere and had no connection with the proffesor. Sabretooth is still a volunter agent for Weapon X, but has an adamantium skeleton along with eight claws. I have many more small examples, but these two are the most noticable.

Summary: Its nice to see a more realistic Marvel Universe!
Review: Well this book was good, but Volume 1: The Tomorrow People was better. This book introduces many new and important character's to the Ultimate Marvel Universe, Including Juggernaut, Nightcrawler, Rogue, Sabertooth, and Nick Fury. The story tells of the Weapon X program kidnapping and basically enslaving the X-men and their leader, Professor Charles Xavier. The X-men are forced to do everything that Professor Xavier has tought them is wrong. Using tiny explosive chips planted into each of the X-men's heads, they are forced to do as they are told, or else KABLOOEE! I also like the fact that the whole Cytorak, or whatever its called, crystal was not included. Some of you may not understand, but taking out things like that make the story less confusing and more realistic. The day Marvel start incorporating things like "magic crystals" and such into the Ultimate Universe, is the day I stop reading them. I have come to expect a level of "realism" from these books. Anyway, this book also hints at the future creation of the Ultimates (the Ultimate Universe's version of the Avengers).

Summary: great followup
Review: What we have here is a great follow up to vol one of the Ultimate X-Men. We introduce more characters and get this new take on the Weapon X story. Well done story at that. Still gets high marks for art and character.

Summary: A Very Compelling Follow Up
Review: When I looked at the shelves and saw Ultimate X-Men Vol.1 last year, I didn't know what to think. Then I opened the book and it grabbed me by surprise. I had to buy this book. After I read it when I got home, I was very pleased in how Mark Millar took hold of the X-Men legacy. I was very eager to buy Weapon X when it first came out, which ended up being a year later, but let me tell you it was well worth the wait. It brought familiar faces into Ultimate X-Men, and it had a terrific story line too. I liked this story better than the Weapon X story in the Wolverine comic books. This book has it all. It introduces new characters like: Rogue, Nightcrawler, Sabertooth, Juggarnut, and more from the Marvel Universe. And yes of course it also has Wolverine. Just like the first story arc this one also has a very jaw dropping ending, but I will not spoil it for you, you'll have to go buy the book and find out for yourself. Now I'm just patiently anticipating the next story arc to come out. I hope you will enjoy this book as much as I have.

Summary: It's not the old X-Men, get over it.
Review: When you pick up just about any of the new Ultimate universe books from Marvel, throw anything you used to know about the them out the window, especially when it comes to Ulitmate X-men. Juggernaut is a mutant now, and Wraith is an X-men villian. You cant say things dont make sense because of how they did things before, this is new, and better in my opinion.

I thought this was a very well written book. It was fun to see Beat's transformation, and Nightcrawler in his teen years. The penciling was second to none for the most part, things kind of went south toward the end in that department.

Overall it was a very entertaining read and a must have for any Wolverine fans, or those trying to wade into the Marvel Universe for the first time.
