Summary: Shazam Finally Looks Like A Hero One Can Enjoy
Review: I have never been a Captian Marvel (Shazam) fan. I always considered him to be a silly excuse for a superhero. Most of the stories introduced were shallow. Character development always lacked and the art work never matured. That has ended with Ross' outstanding portrayal.

Dinni (writer) and Ross (artist) have made an enjoyable and interesting story in their third special installment of the DC comic hero's (Superman and Batman are the others). Ross' 50's film noir look is a perfect fit for this sometimes overly wholesome charachter.

Marvel deals with saving a city from a volcana, stopping some "bad men" and confronting an abusive father. A good collecter's item.

Summary: The power of a good story
Review: I was completely impressed with the latest installment of Paul Dini and Alex Ross' tabloid size series. In these volumes, they have captured the core spirit of classic characters.

Captain Marvel is a different character than Superman. Superman feels the call of responsibility, that his powers are not his alone but a gift for all mankind. Captain Marvel feels a sense of wonder at his powers, and has fun with them. He is, after all, a kid at heart. This volume truly brings home that point. One of my favorite scenes shows Captain Marvel stifling a yawn as a bank robber brandishes a shotgun. This is a classic scene from the old Fawcetts, and it made me smile. Actually, many of the panels made me smile fondly. Maybe that is why I like Captain Marvel so much.

Naturally, it is impossible to discuss an Alex Ross piece without commenting on the art. It is extraordinary, and completely up to par. Paul Dini's prose adds to the spectacle. While saying nothing new about Captain Marvel, The Power of Hope rephrases what we already know quite eloquently.

Summary: Mightest Mortal finest Dini/Ross Book
Review: Shazam! Once again, Alex Ross and Paul Dini take a look at the human side of DC's greatest heroes (Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and Cap. Marvel). I think that this is the best book of the series, even if it is dealing with one of the lesser known characters of the DC universe.

I had not been a Captain Marvel fan until I picked up Kingdom Come and was introduced to Billy Batson by Alex Ross. This is another great work with the character. I was impressed by the actions and thoughts of the character and I love the human take on him. What would a boy with super powers like Captain Marvel do with them? Being a hero is more then just saving people, it is also inspiring them and giving hope. The most touching moment in any of the books came at the hospital with Captain Marvel and the terminal girl, making her feel safe. Dini and Ross's best work so far, here's to hoping that the upcoming JLA work gets better.

Summary: STUNNING ROSS ART!
Review: Shazam: Power of Hope, the third installment in the Paul Dini and Alex Ross series of over-sized graphic novels, focuses on the Big Red Cheese of the DC Comics world, Captain Marvel. Billy Batson, Marvel's youthful alter ego, comes into possession of a massive bag of letters sent to the hero. One letter from the City Children's Hospital inspires Batson to say his magic word and, as Marvel, agree to spend a few days with the kids there. He tells them stories about his escapades, carries a special surgeon in from Japan to treat one with damaged eyes, and takes children on a variety of flying adventures. He threatens one boy's father into stopping the beatings.

Once again, Ross provides his most excellent paintings to illustrate the tale. Ross is one of the best artists working in the comics field today, and his work is startling in its ability to give life to his and Dini's words and characters.

Ross' sense of realism suits a character like Captain Marvel. The Captain fills out his costume. He looks like a hero. The gold sash around his waist is a signature to Mr. Ross' interpretation's success. The cape does not have a design. Instead, Mr. Ross takes away the gold flower-like patterns dotting the Captain's cape and replaces them with gold rope to give his costume even greater depth.

Summary: A well needed and timeless message
Review: Someone else on here stated that if you could read this book without crying, you were better than he was. Friend - I'm in the same boat. I admit my eyes filled unashamedly when reading of the Captain's work with children and his love for them. We too often forget how the little things we do can touch the life of a person around us, especially a child - and this book, I believe, brings us squarely back to center. If you buy no other books this year, if you never buy ANY book - buy this one. You will be touched and enriched by it.

Summary: Stunning and touching.
Review: The artwork of Alex Ross was stunning as I expected it to be. I did not expect the story to be so interesting and touching though. Captain Marvel visits a bunch of sick children in a hospital and shares with them some of his adventures.

I felt like one of the kids in the story as the Captain shares some of his exploits with them.

A very touching and enjoyable 5 star read. In a word - SHAZAM!

Summary: Three Stars for the art, but the story..
Review: The script has written by Dini does not really add any depth to Captain Marvel, but the painting done by Ross is as always excellient. Buy it for the artwork, but the written story itself never goes anywhere.

Summary: Not just for nerds!
Review: This is the third collaboration between Alex Ross and Paul Dini, and again it's just in time for the christmas market. This oversized tabloid format really shows Ross's skill as a painter off and the writing is always sensible and accessible. Basically this is a book that comic geeks can read and that children can also read. The art from this book will be auctioned off for charity, so buying it is almost like giving to charity. (Almost but not quite) Overall it's a good book, an entertaining read, and Hope will look good on the shelf beside Peace and War (The previous Superman and Batman books by Dini and Ross).
