Summary: it;'s back in print
Review: ... I dont' know why it's not up here, but hopefully soon it will be, unless they are doing a limited reprint. Good luck!

Know tat this is not a happy story, the end - some snippets of eric's memories, perhaps, but the bulk is a man driven insane by the thougth of spending eternity alone. No matter how many villans he kills, no matter how dead he is, he is not dead from his pain. I dont' have the book in fromt of me currently but here's a quote as best I can remember it:

"Eric screams and pounds his head against the wall as the phantom fire truck paces across his vision, all he wants is pain, pain and hate. Yes, hate, but never ever fear, fear is for the enemy, fear and bullets."

I loved this comic, it got me though some hard times in life. It;'s an amazing story of life and loss, but it's not all lessons and appriciating life. Deep down all eric wants is death.

Blessed be

Summary: I can't believe it's out of print now.
Review: Nothing I can write here will really convey how incredibly, intensely moving this book is. Like other reviewers, I read this book because of my love for the movie--but the movie is NOTHING compared to the book. I've had my copy of this book for seven years now. It's battered and creased because I carried it around in my backpack for so long, reading it again and again. I came to Amazon to get a new copy because my old one is so worn-out. I don't know of anyone who has read The Crow without it seriously affecting them. It's out of print now for some reason I cannot understand, but if you can find a used copy, then by all means do so. You won't be sorry. I really just cannot say enough about it. Buy it used, borrow it from a friend, do whatever it takes to read it.

Summary: Wow. That's all you can really say...
Review: It seems ordinary. Your basic plot of love-stronger-than-death: a newlywed couple are brutally killed by a bunch of stoned thugs, and a year later, the man returns from the dead, invincible and really angry. Scratch around fifty thousand thugs. The end, right?

Except it's so much more than that. One thing you will notice at once is the highly stylized artwork. Sure, now it may not look so original (given the 50,000,000 imitators) but you've got to remember how old it is. The one thing that stands out is the eyes - there are scenes where Eric (the avenger) stands in a relaxed or otherwise "normal" fashion, but his eyes look alive, burning with indescribable hate. He also is quite literary, often quoting books, poetry and the Bible, adding to the atmosphere. Though you may be shocked at the vast amounts of violence the Crow perpetrates, by the chapter "The Atrocity Exhibition", which fully explains what happened to him and his beloved, you'll be firmly on his side. There is absolutely no way to feel sorry for any of Eric's victims. The action is interrupted frequently by long stretches showing Eric's flashbacks or just his grief, which is intense. Some of the images of Eric crying and cursing God and everything are so disturbing they're unforgettable.

In a way, this book portrays a chapter of musical history. O'Barr (the author) had been listening to a great deal of music before writing it, and it shows - Eric often quotes the band Joy Division (the book is also dedicated to JD's singer, who killed himself) and many of the prefaces/notes/expositions contain quotes from The Cure. Also, Eric himself is modeled after the singers Iggy Pop and Ian Curtis, and many of the chapter titles are names of various songs.

Despite the vast amounts of action and violence, you are as a reader never allowed to forget Eric's motivation. The theme of love always comes back, and it's soul-wrenching to watch Eric try to fight his alternating memories of happiness and pain. In Eric's world, there is only good or bad, black or white, purity and love or hatred and brutality, and the dialogue and the obvious passion of the book's author makes all of it come alive. By the end, you really grow to hope that the Crow can somehow find his inner peace. You should read this book at least once.

Summary: The Best
Review: This is by far the best graphic novel ever made. It blows away anything by Neil Gaiman or Garth Ennis. It is sentimentla and sweet. It uses poetry and prose to weave a tapestry of beauty.

The movie does not even compare to this. I love the movie but this is far better and far more tragic. After reading this the movie pales in comparison. This is truly one of the greatest stories I have ever read.

Summary: A great love story
Review: When you break this story down, that's exactly what you have. This is a beautiful love story written by someone that lost someone special. Of course, I appreciate the gothic overtones & sense of revenge, & I'm one of the few American's out there not protesting gratuitous violence. If you like a good romantic tale, or just like a great gothic story, buy this book now.

Summary: mediocre
Review: There is a whole mystyque industry recolving around this book. The story of O'Barr is intertwined with that of the main character of the book. And then there's the death of Brandon Lee while shooting the movie; and who know what else. Without doubt, this is a story that goths and heavy rock fans like. It's violent but tender, and anyone who knows hard-rockers personally will agree that those are bad guys with a whipped cream-filled hearth. But this mix of gratuitous violence and unbearable pastel-like moments is a perfect display of bad taste. I was counterd by a fan telling me that "it's real life!" Who cares? I judge only by what I read, and find this story predictable and pathetic. The pencils and the inks are equally unremarkable, displaying an old conventional Marvel taste. To read good, gripping graphic novels, check out "Maus" by Spiegelmann, or "The Sandman" by Gaiman & co. I give this work 2 stars only because sometimes the text (spoken by the decadent, literary Crow) is surprising and rich in imagery.

Summary: "...There is always SOMETHING left to lose. ...."
Review: The CROW is another amazing piece of literature relegated to "cult" status because it exists as literature with "pictures attached". It is, in actuality, a timeless novel, from one of the GREAT visual artists of the 20th century. ...and James O'Barr can tell a tale as well. ...He's lived this one. This novel is deeply felt and expressed. The CROW is on par with WATCHMEN in it's intensity and scope. It IS a " 'HAMLET' for the nineties", a work of literary scope and personal power. It is NOT another "lost soul" heaping thir petty woes on the world and an unsuspecting public; the CROW will tear you to cinders and it will touch you in the heart of anger an helplessness, but it will LIFT you, it will remind you of the things that ARE important and...perhaps some things which SHOULD be (or ARE and were neglected/forgotten). Don't write this novel off as some "goth child fantasy"...those expectations and falsehoods are RUINING it 4 you. Simply put THE CROW is a classic...and a dire, loving message. Remind yourself....READ THE CROW. ...and learn. Miss it at your own peril.
