Summary: It doesn't get any better than this
Review: The best comic story. Ever. You'll love it, you won't put it down. If this was written in book form, it'd be considered classic literature. If you think comics are childish and silly, BUY THIS, it'll change your view point forever. Alan Moore is a genious and this is his best work ever, I guarantee you'll love it. Dave Gibbons draws the best work of his career, you'll never forget the scenes from his 'post-apocalypse' scenes. If you don't own this, shame on you!

Summary: Excellent, but flawed
Review: Watchmen is a superb piece of work let down by one serious flaw. The main 'bad guy' has a masterplan so monumentally stupid and conrived that I have never been able to swallow it.

A pity because EVERYTHING else is perfect - characters, art, structure, writing, setting.

Its also not Alan Moore's best work - the first half of V For Vendetta (which trailed off) and the wonderful English take on ET, 'Skizz' are better.

Summary: Classic Literature--THIS MUST BE READ!!!!
Review: Indeed...Enough has already been said about this book to fill Libraries...it's been analyzed and lauded incessantly!!-and with EVERY reason!!-which makes absolutely no difference at all if you haven't read it!! This is, without question, a CLASSIC of Western literature; the FINEST, most perfect example of the "comic book" or "graphic novel" artform (THIS is how words and pictures SHOULD work together!! THis is unadulterated BRILLIANCE!!); not to mention, one of the best novels ever written. I was blessed with being able to experience this book in its original, serialized format, when it originally appeared in 1985-1986 ...It has lost NONE of its POWER, or BEAUTY, or HORROR over the time since passed; in fact it has, indeed, only grown and continues to open up down new avenues every time i read it! ...much like a Joyce...or Hemingway novel. ...Or, especially, a Kubrick film.... This is not to say that Alan Moore has not done brilliant work SINCE this time, he has; but this work will stand as a benchmark, an imprint (which has already influenced the medium for ILL as well as good!!) indelible and fantastic...here for all time...as an example.

Indeed...I cannot say enough about this work. It MUST be READ!! It should be taught and discussed in the curriculum of every college and University on the planet. IF YOU PICK UP AND READ ONE BOOK THIS DECADE THAT YOU HAVE NEVER EXPERIENCED BEFORE, THIS MUST BE IT!! The story sucks you in from the COVER!!, the first PANEL!!! ...all the way through!! You are subsumed...you are part of this universe...YOU BELIEVE. Especially if you've never read "a comic book", but even if you are a constant reader or afficionado, this is a novel you must experience and which you will return to repeatedly, ...each time with renewed fascination!! Especially if you are going to square this book up against others in the Graphic novel field, you'll find that rarely has such a level or span been attempted, ...never mind achieved. ...Perhaps in Dave Sim's CEREBUS or Frank Miller's classic The DARK KNIGHT RETURNS or his indelible first run on the Daredevil book (so AKIRA KUROSAWAlike)...perhaps in those magnificent works. ...But as I (and so many others) have already stressed, WATCHMEN goes (and IS !) beyond the comic/graphic artform and is a piece of superior literature...with the additional magic of cohesive, interwoven illustration. Each doing its part to weave and complete the story. WATCHMEN speaks to the 20th century...and of it.... Everything that can be said ABOUT this book HAS been. ...Everything has been said except the things it says itself!!

Simply: There has never been anything like it before or since ! You MAY NOT miss experiencing this!! ...you MUST not!! This IS modern literature. Reading WATCHMEN is a necessity.

Summary: Alan Moore's masterpiece
Review: "Watchmen" takes an interesting premise and makes it into a compelling story. Unlike any comic book before, "Watchmen" explores super-heroes in the "real" world and the effect that super-heroes have on society. Set in a world where electric cars exist and Richard Nixon remained president for almost 20 years, "Watchmen" explores various issues about humanity and heroes. This is a truly fantastic story that plays like an alternate version of Post-World War II America. It's an amazing story with a variety of interesting characters and a complex plot that cannot be explained in a few sentences. Just read it. You will be glad you did.

Summary: The Greatest
Review: This graphic novel is not only the greatest of its genres, but also one of the most compelling stories ever in the end of the century. If you are unfamiliar with the written expression of graphic novels, then you cannot start anywhere better than this. Its epitemizes everything this mode of expression can be. It manipulates its structure to add irony and wit to its story, which is simply the most fascinating I have ever read. It is simply the best you can read. If you are a fan of graphic novels like I am, you have to read this to know just how good this genre can be. Simply the greatest. You don't have to read it as a comic book, because it is not. "Watchmen" is a great story that any person can appreciate. Though the Cold War is over, this tale is about so much more. There is so muchin it if you seek to search it, so many meangings, so many interpretations, and so much to learn. This novel can teach you not only how great graphic novels can be, but it can teach you about yourself and what you believe. To understand what I am saying, you simply have to experience "Watchmen".

Summary: The greatest story ever
Review: Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons put together one unbelievable story. It has so many subtleties in the art, that even after six reads, I notice new things. Just because it's a comic book, doesn't mean it's bad or childish. In fact, it's better than any novel I've read.

Summary: A Thinking Man's Comic Book
Review: I know some people who would dismiss this comic because it doesn't have a lot of hard action in it. The reason is that this is a Thinking Man's comic book. It provokes thought far beyond the average graphic novel, and I think has more literary value that most normal novels. A must read for everyone looking for something more from comics.

Summary: Morally ambiguous, unambiguously excellent
Review: Intricate and intelligent, Watchmen is an intense book. Replacing typical good vs. evil confrontations with moral ambiguity, Alan Moore writes a story questioning how superheroes can make the world a better place (fight crime? fight its causes? or turn away from fighting and invent things?) and how far they should go to do so. All this is wrapped in multiple plot lines examining different characters struggling to meet the various challenges placed before them while they move - unknowing or not - toward the book's central mystery. These different lines come together in an ending that, while surprising and imaginative, is still overshadowed by the power of the story being told. More dramatic novel than traditional comic book, reading the Watchmen is an amazing and absorbing experience.
