Rating: Summary: You'll forget your reading backwards Review: This graphic novel has a simple but brilliant premise, a game show where the students of one school must kill one another until the last survivor stands. This is my first venture into manga and my curiousity was only peaked because the translator is my favorite comics writer, Keith Giffen. I was pleasantly suprised at the level of sophistication the story leads into. The gore is heavy but neccesary to make the story work.
Rating: Summary: A good manga based on the Battle Royale novel Review: This is manga based on the original novel Battle Royale. Battle Royale was a novel about a class of Japanese junior high school students who are sent to a deserted island, given weapons and forced to kill each other off until one survivor remains, who is allowed to return to civilization. It's an intriguing premise that turns into a surprisingly gripping and potent story. This manga follows the original book much more closely than the movie Battle Royale, which was made later. It is worth noting that this manga book only covers the first part of the story. It ends with a "to be continued" and the remaining manga books have not been released in English at the time of this writing. So don't expect the complete story. Because the story is divided up over several manga books, it is able to follow the original story almost exactly. The movie, as good as it was, had to cut corners in order to cover the story in a two hour period. It is a well-made and fun to read story, especially for fans of the book or the movie.
Rating: Summary: The Greatest Manga...Ever? I Dont Know this is my first. Review: This is the first manga i have ever bought. And because of this i am a manga addict. From all the other manga i have seen this is the best... best story, art, characters, atmosphere. Everything is perfect. However this book is for 18 years and older as it contains gore, language, nudity, and sex: THE PERFECT COMBINATION! And its not silly either. I highly recomend. In addition to this product, i also recomend a life. I dont know if amazon sells them but make sure you have one while reading this. Otherwise you need help.
Rating: Summary: Not an accurate translation. Review: TokyoPop choose to do an adaption of the story. They added lots of slang to the dialogue. The adapted dialogue is like that of a bad Hollywood movie. They also gave the characters nicknames. I like my Manga with 100% accurate translations. If you want to read the real story of Battle Royale I suggest you get Viz's wersion of Koushun Takami original Battle Royale novel. Viz did an accurate translation of the novel.
Rating: Summary: Sordid Story Review: When i first saw Battle Royale sitting on the shelf, i was kind of turned off because it was plastic wrapped, so i couldnt actually see the drawings. However, i went to TokyoPop and previewed it, and then bought it at the waldenbooks in Santa Maria. I am really glad i purchased the manga. Keith Griffen did an amazing job with the english adaption, without cutting out any violence or storyline that the original writers would have included. For those of you with weak constitutions, i dont recommend this book, because there is extreme violence shots in it, and also sex. Well, in the first book there is a rape, i should say, which threw me for a loop, considering thats not the kind of stuff you see in most manga, which gives it an even greater appeal. For those of you who enjoy massive amounts of violence, while maintaining a plot and having the artwork to support it, i definantly think that Battle Royale is the book for you.
Rating: Summary: A good adaptation of the novel, so far... Review: While the style comes across less dark than the novel, and the content is often more overtly sexual, this seems like it is headed toward being a good adaptation of the novel. In the part we've seen so far, it seems to be keeping much closer to the book than the movie did. I have high hopes for the rest of the series.
