Summary: Slight, predictable yarn
Review: I doubt I'm spoiling things by saying that the "Mr. M" mysteriously spoken of in the first part of the tale is indeed Professor Moriarty. Frankly I deduced it in about two seconds. The eventual "revelation" was distinctly anti-climactic.

The rest of the story follows this lead. Predictable, obvious choices by Moore keep everything from getting too interesting. The characters are shallow caricatures, and Mina Harker is a preposterously anachronistic nag. Even the small flashback with Sherlock Holmes seems ersatz--Moore has an astonishingly tin ear for one of the most frequently and easily depicted characters in literature.

Oh, and the bit with Moriarty being a creation of the British government? Come off it, Moore. That kind of postmodern "shocking" twist has been done to death.

The movie, which has gotten a lukewarm reception, can't be much worse than the uninspiring tale on hand here. It's tiresome except for nerds who want to play "spot the hidden reference".

Summary: Alan Moore is a god!
Review: If you hated the movie than you are an individual of taste and sound judgement and hence worthy of this graphic novel.

Summary: Heroes and Villains
Review: Alan Moore is probably the best writer in the comics industry today. With this series, he has come up with another winner. As many of you have no doubt heard, it features a team of heroes (and villains) from Victorian fiction. It is all brilliantly written, and Kevin O'Neill's artwork compliments the writing perfectly. This is a must buy for any serious fan of the comic book genre. I also think that many people who don't normally read comics will like it, too.

Summary: Another coup from the brilliant mind of Alan Moore!
Review: The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is an utterly delightful book. In it, writer Alan Moore assembles a superhero team of a completely different sort, drawing on British literary figures of the late 1800s. Writing in a style reminiscent of that era, Moore has crafted a superb story that stands with the classics of adventure, science fiction and a bit of the grotesque.

Some people might be completely lost after reading pages where the only text is dialogue in Arabic, Chinese or French -- but the story is plain for all to see, brought to life through the art of Kevin O'Neill, whose work supercedes the language barrier and evokes turn-of-the-century thrills and chills. Ben Dimagmaliw is a perfect match, employing a muted palate in his coloration.

Summary: An instant comic classic
Review: Alan Moore, the writer of the deconstructionist super-hero work, Watchmen, once again delivers an enormous work. With a cunning grasp of the language of victorian literature and a keen insight on character of his subjects Alan Moore succeds in creating what he believes is a non-boring super hero team. Exploiting the strengths and weaknesses of the involved characters Moore draws his audience in like a spider with flies. It is up to a group of infamous people led by the charming Wilhelmina Harker, late of Dracula fame, to save England and the world from one of the most sinister villains of all time. Rider Haggard's Allan Quatermain, a helpless opium addict and crackshot, Stevenson's dualistic anti-hero Dr. Jeckyll\Mr. Hyde, H. G. Wells Hawley Griffin, the invisible man, and Vernes terrible Cpt. Nemo must all learn to cooperate and get the job done. An excellent story exceeded only by its genius grasp of the language and the characters.

Summary: INCREDIBLE!!
Review: An awesome book!! If you like cyberpunk, you need to check out this book. Victorian era heroes and villians form a team to combat an evil mastermind. I honestly feel this is one of Alan Moore's best works. I liked it more than Watchmen.

Summary: This voume holds TWO stories...
Review: The first story is a graphic novel which pits Jules Verne's Captain Nemo, HG Well's Invisible Man, H. Rider Haggard's Allan Quatermain, Robert L. Stevenson's Dr. Jekyll AND Bram Stoker's Minna Murray against an evil force, a crimelord so powerful that he may end up destroying much of London if not stopped. The setting is placed in the late 19th century England, but a slightly twisted verison, lovingly detailed and illustrated by Alan Moore and Kevin O'Neill.
The second story places Allan Quatermain in a story with HP Lovecraft's Randolph Carter, Edgar Rice Burrough's John Carter and HG Well's Time Traveller. The setting is that of a story from Lovecraft, with unknown dangers and fear from beyond reality. The story is very much in the style of a serial, with a cliffhanger at the end of each chapter and every chapter starting off with a few paragraphs to give you background information, as if you have been waiting weeks for the next issue! The second story happens before the great adventures and events of the first, so you may wish to even start with that one first. Both hint as great things to come.
I can't wait for the second volume!

Summary: Skip the movie ¿ Get the comic.
Review: If the same "brilliant" minds that took Alan Moore's "League" and re-wrote it for the movies were also given The Bible to adapt, I'm sure we could look forward to that scene where Jesus & Hercules single-handedly take on the evil forces of The Mummy's legions.

In New York.

The film has taken the barest bones of the original conceit (taking now public domain characters from 19th century literature and have them form a proto-Impossible Missions Force) and thoroughly stripped all that was fresh, intelligent, witty, subtle or interesting about it. Unnecessary characters (Dorian Grey, Tom Sawyer?!?) are added. The whole second half of the plot is dropped. Quartermain, (Sean Connery's character in the film) is made the group leader, and Mina Harker, a mysterious character who's vampyrism is only vaguely hinted at in the book, has gone altogether, ermmm, batty.

By contrast, this, the comic version, is by far more literate. And the art, particularly the subtle dark coloring, is absolutely first rate.

The good news is that the film is tanking and "The Watchmen", regarded by most as Moore's magnum opus, shall never be subjugated to such a fate.

Summary: "I'm waiting to be impreshed..."
Review: Alan Moore is perhaps the finest author of graphic literature today - even all time. At his best (The Watchmen, Miracleman) he pushes the limits of the genre philosphically as well as artistically - questioning the very foundations of comics and superheroes. This may not be Alan Moore's best work, but it certainly is entertaining.

Basically, this is The X-Men set in Victorian England and populated with characters from Victorian literature. In actuality, this is what comics were made for - creating an alternate universe where the Invisible Man and Mr. Hyde get together to do some damage. It is pretty-much a straightforward adventure story, told with Alan Moore's cynicism and wit. The artwork is much more mainstream than I am used to in the typical Moore story, but don't worry - there's plenty of blood and guts.

I have not yet seen the movie, but I'm pretty sure the book will be better.
