Summary: We were all too busy being mischievous.
Review: I put off reading this book for several months after I bought it because there are so many great YA books and so little time.....The reviews just did not inspire me. Yet, it was a Newbery Honor? Well, I just finished it a few minutes ago. I carried this treasure with me on my beach walk this morning because I could not let it out of my hands or my mind. Maybe you had to have grown up in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by boys with more privileges than afforded the girls. Maybe you had to be surrounded by European immigrant families as a young girl to appreciate this, and I did. What captures me most about a book is if the voice is true, and this reads more like a diary a young girl would write, not an adult-edited version of one. Just think about it. When you wrote in your diary at age 12, did you bother to put in all the punctuation, especially for dialogue? Not I. I was too busy being mischievous. And the capital letters distracting? That is May's form of exclamation. And to say that the chapters were written in episodes with little connection? I'm beginning to think the reviewers and I read different books, indeed! Oh, and if you don't like this book, don't bother reading "Adeline, Falling Star" by M. P. Osborne. You won't like it, either. However, if you do like May Amelia, you will love Adaline, too.

Summary: Our Only May Amelia
Review: Our only may amelia is an enchanting story about a young girlthat took place around 1900. May is a very adventurous girl, but the book itself, was not jam-packed with excitment. I suggest that if oyu like action filled books, Our Only May Amelia is not the right book for you.Over all, i thought that this book was worth reading!

Summary: I was surprised!
Review: I always have a read-aloud in progress with my 7th grade language arts classes, and my sole purpose is that we will enjoy some good books together. No pressure. No grades. After four books with male protagonists, I decided on May Amelia as a female protagonist who the boys in my classes could put up with whether they liked her or not. The boys' reactions were surprisingly positive, and the girls loved the book. Undoubtedly, May's tomboy ways contributed to this, but the boys were also touched by the strong emotion in the book. It was sometimes difficult to read this book alound due to the lack of quotation marks, and I found it helpful to read each chapter to myself before reading it aloud. Overall, I found that my students enjoyed the book more than I expected they would. The afterward about the author's family prompted good discussion.

Summary: Our Only Jennifer L. Holm
Review: "Our Only May Amelia" is an enchanting story of a twelve year old tomboy. May Amelia, living in 1899 on the Nasel River in Washington State, is the only girl for miles around, and is unique in everyway. Jennifer L. Holm has done a magnificent job. Not many authors can win their first novel an award, as she did. I would definatly rank her with other extraordanary authors, such as Gail Carson Levine, Roald Dahl, and J.K. Rowling. Her writing style is unique. She is truly our only Jennifer L. Holm.

Summary: An Only Original
Review: I read this book and couldn't put it down until it ended. It takes place about a girl in southern Washington: May Amelia Jackson. Personally, I thought this was my second favorite book besides ELLA ENCHANTED. Really, it may be a little boring for boys, because they don't have the "girl spirit". But for girls, it's totally different. I found this book exciting and very interesting. Though it is a fiction book, it actually has some facts about Washington state.

Summary: Outstanding story!
Review: We loved this book! Our teacher read this book to us out loud. It was about what we are learning in Social Studies, the history of Washington State. We describe it as: inspiring, adventurous, breath-taking, incredible, nerve racking, and suspensfull. We would unanimously recommend it for 3rd or 4th grade readers and above. We hope that Jennifer L. Holm will keep writing her fabulous stories. Summary: A fun read for all ages
Review: I picked up this book on a whim in my local bookstore, and didn't put it down until I had taken it home and read the entire thing. It is a heartfelt story of the trials and tribulations of being a young girl with six and a half brothers (one is really a cousin). It also has an interesting exploration of Finnish-American culture, and a villain figure (May Amelia's grandmother) that you just "love to hate." I would highly reccommend this book to kids and adults, or also as a good read-aloud book for parents and children to share.
