Summary: Our Only May Amelia
Review: This book is one of the best books I have ever read! I like how May Amelia is so herself. Not like those girls who like Matti. I'm glad she can get along with most of her brothers. I really think it's likely that Amelia is the only girl in Nasel. I read 85 pages in one night! I was so interested. It was really sweet of that Chinhook man taking Amelia and and her brother home. I wish I could be Amelia. I would love to have her family.

Summary: One great book
Review: I read this book for fun a vaction to the beach. I got it the first day and i couldn't put it down. I missed the whole beach but it was wourth it. This book is so exiting, but it is even more exiting when you actually live in the same place as she did! I read it because I thought hey this is were i live. And wow it was great! It was so great that i am doing a book report for the book. The book looks long but the pages seem to fly by. Soon you will be with May siting on baby island hopping for pa pa not to come. Bottom line WOUNDERFUL BOOK.

Summary: Only the best review for May Amelia
Review: Jennifer Holm's Our Only May Amelia is a touching account of a young girl growing up in the harsh Nasel River Settlement of Washington State. The characters in this story are so well developed that you begin to think of them as your own family. I experienced many different emotions while reading this story, sadness, anger, laughter, and frustration but never boredom. This story takes you for a ride and doesn't stop until the last page. I would strongly recommend this book for any reader who likes adventure with historical realism thrown in or for a classroom teacher beginning a unit on the settlement of America. There are many opportunities for learning about the history and geography of Washington State and Finnish immigrants.

Summary: It's ok...
Review: I had to read this book for school and didn't find it very interesting. I mean, it was ok, but not my type of book. this is for people who like wilderness stories and such. But check it out anyway, maybe you'll like it. To me, it wasn't very interesting and and I never really finished it. One thing I liked about it though, were the surprises. That makes the book sort of worth it. Well anyways, check it out!!!

Summary: better read than to listen too...
Review: my husband and grand daughter listened to the audio version while driving up to the lake on our vacation (I took the dog in a separate car) and loved the tape. I read the book version and enjoyed it. However, I didn't follow up with the tape because I felt the "performer" lacked the voice and inflection necessary to adeptly read the story. Her voice had a nasal "valley girl" accent - not fitting character or the time. Perhaps I am too critical because I have loved most of the audio books I have listened to (Harry Potter series, Richard Peck's Grandma Dowdel books) and thought the narration outstanding.
The story itself is interesting, especially since it is based on fact and gives a good indication of life in frontier times in Washington. The reader roots for May Amelia and her family to survive, to grow close, to overcome the many obstacles and challenges presented. May Amelia is definitely the "star" and you hope to hear more about her in her adult years and see what happens as she grows to womanhood.

Summary: At best, a diversion
Review: Most of my students (8th/9th) said this book was "fair." It starts out satisfying, but loses energy toward the end. It's enjoyable, but there are other more exciting books out there. And WHY it was a Newberry Honor book, we can't tell.

Summary: A Girl's Life on the Nasel River in 1899
Review: Our Only May Amelia is a fun action packed adventure story. It covers about a year of May Amelia's life. May Amelia tells us about losing a sibling, almost drowning in the Nasel River, and being chased off by her evil grandmother.

The story, by Jennifer Holm, is set in Nasel, WA in 1899. May is always getting yelled at and scolded about not being a "young lady." Only her brother Wilbert thinks she doesn't have to be, being the only young girl on the Nasel River, plus being the sister to seven brothers.

I think you should read this book if you like interesting adventure novels. You should know it can be hard to read because the author uses unnecessary capital letters and many confusing words.

Thank you for reading my review.

Summary: "Our Only May Amelia"Very exciting and full of many wonders!
Review: Our Only May Amelia Imagine living in the Nasel and having to do all the work around the house cooking, cleaning, and working outside. May Amelia never had time to play with her brothers because her mom was pregnant and she had to do the house work because she was the only girl. She had seven brothers but always wanted a little sister to share the work with and have fun with. So she wished for her mom to have a baby girl. This is book is called, "Our Only May Amelia" by Jennifer L. Holm is all about. When it was time for her mom to have her baby May was so happy to find out it was a girl. May Amelia couldn't stop thinking about how much fun they would have when her baby sister get older. After that May Amelia was so happy until she found out her sister died. The baby stopped breathing and she was just lying there peacefully in her deep sleep left alone. In the other part of the book May Amelia cut her hair to look like a boy. First, she asked her brother Wilbert if she could work like the boys and work with them on the Nasel.
