Summary: THIS WAS SO GREAT!!!!!
Review: I really loved this book. it is about a young girl, who is a complete tomboy with LOTS of brothers, trying to become a "Proper Young Lady." May was just trying to fit in. i truly hated her Grandmother Patience, however, but i suppose that was how it was intended to be. i am sure you will hate her too. it was a great book. the only reason i gave it 4 stars instead of 5 was because there were too many capital letters. i warn you, however, that it is a sad book. the ending is sad, but it seems right and fitting. anyone older than 10 would probably aprecciate and love this book.

Summary: Good book.
Review: Our Only May Amelia by: Jennifer L. Holm was a good book. This book is a collection of short stories about the main character's life. The stories were interesting, but May Amelia, the main character was very self-centered and shallow. She never listened to her parents or anyone's advice. If May decided it was right, it was! You should read this book if you like extremely selfish people. The stories told were very intriguing. May got in to many predicaments that didn't turn out to be just what she thought they would. Her favorite brother was always watching out for her. When her crabby grandma came to her house due to the fact that she was getting old, she beats May and sets the family in an uproar. I liked this part of the book very much, it gave the book substance and something that is constant. The stories were pulled from all over this time in her life, and when her grandmother came it gave the book a unified theme. The setting, on the Nasel, made some of the stories unrealistic and far-fetched. As good as this book may be some of the stories and characters were dry. Despite all of this I thought the book was O.K., it wasn't great or anything, but I still liked it a little.

Summary: authenticity?
Review: I did not read all ... reviews so perhaps my questions about the books have already been discussed. I enjoyed the book thoroughly, but question that there were pine trees and fireflies in the southwestern region of Washington state -ever. Neither is indigenous to the area. Also, at the end of the story, the author mentions daffodils and crocus blooming. In 1899, most big families in the region were not buying and planting such exotic bulbs when there were so many mouths to feed! There are plenty of native flowers which bloom in the spring that would define the moment with accuracy. I hope Jennifer can answer this posting. Perhaps a new edition of the book could correct these obvious errors?

Summary: This book won me over
Review: As a public school librarian--and local history buff--in the State of Washington, I started reading "Our Only May Amelia" with every intent of loving the book. Instead, I found myself puzzled that a book without quotation marks, and very few punctuation marks, would be the winner of the Newbery Honor Medal. These became hurdles for me to stumble on in order to win me over.

However, in the end, I became accustomed to the unconventional punctuation, and "May Amelia" did win me over. I still think its unfortunate that a publisher would make a very exciting and realistic piece of historical fiction difficult for middle readers to access, especially when they will also have to struggle with some unusual Finnish names.

I came away from "Our Only May Amelia" feeling like I'd encountered a piece of Washington (and Oregon) state history that I never knew about, notably the community of "Little Finland" on the Nasel (now spelled "Naselle") River, near where the Columbia River and the Pacific Ocean meet. The descriptions of life on a homestead are true to the firsthand stories I heard from my wife's German grandmother whose family homesteaded in the same region during the same era.

Since I recently vacationed in Astoria, Oregon, I found the description of this hilly maritime community (the oldest settlement west of the Mississippi) physically accurate and true to the facts about fishing, canneries, maritime activities and immigrant peoples (including Chinese cannery workers) that are beautifully presented at the local Maritime Museum.

The experiences of May Amelia are realistic and accurately reflect the hardships of living in a rugged Pacific Northwest logging and fishing community at the turn of the last century. I would warn the sensitive reader that there are some rough edges to this story, including a couple of profanities and several deaths.

Summary: Our Only May Amelia
Review: I just got done reading Our Only May Amelia written by Jennifer L. Holm. It was a great book. Now I know how the people in the early 1900's lived. The book was about a girl who had seven brothers and wants to do everything they want to do. Most of the boys think she's good for nothing and are mean to her. Some things go wrong in their family and they have a hard time getting things back to normal. It all works out in the end. I would recomend this this book to anyone. I really enjoyed this book.

Summary: from one who grew up in naselle
Review: I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was well written and captivating.
I went back through the years to my childhood through the eyes of May Amelia. I identified much with her tough independent spirit which shines through the pages.
Thank you Jennifer Holm for helping me remember!!!

Summary: I Didn't Like This Book
Review: This book was so dumb I can't believe it won a Newbery Medal. For example, Every Word In A Sentence Is Capitalized. And, there are no quotation marks, so you can't tell whether they are talking or not. Plus, why is Kaarlo so mean to May? I think Jennifer Holm should read something like "The Hobbit" by J. R. R. Tolkien or "Absolutely Normal Chaos" by Sharon Creech or "The Westing Game" by Ellen Raskin. There are a lot of books out there that are good so don't buy this book.
