Summary: Our Only May Amelia
Review: Our Only May Amelia is about a teenage girl who lives in a town with all boys. There has never been a girl Amelia's age in the town. She has many older brothers who all look after her. Her dad is paranoid about Amelia getting hurt and into trouble, but Amelia can't help it, she grew up around boys and likes being a boy better than a girl. Once her mom gets pregnant and becomes sick Amelia must stay around home and help her mom cook, clean, and do other chores. She misses playing outside with her brothers and just as she thinks things can't get worse, they do. Her grandma comes to live with her family. Amelia now has to put up with being harassed, humiliated, and abused by her grandma. The only good thing that she can hope for is a baby sister and Grandmother Patience's death. As her wishes come true something terrible happens making Amelia run far away from home.
This was a good book. It is full of adventure, belonging, and tragedy. I would recommend this book who is dying for adventure, sorrow, and happiness.

Summary: Our Only May Amelia
Review: I read a book called Our Only May Amelia by Jennifer L. Holm. This is a DCF book for 2000-2001. This is one of my favorite books of all times, because the girl, May Amelia, is like me. May acts a lot like me. After you read my response, go to your local or school library, try to find this book and read it! This book isn't just for girls. It's for boys, too. This book is about May Amelia Jackson and all of her actions and activities. She had to deal with people who didn't like her very much, but loved her. This book is about May Amelia Jackson, who acts like a boy, because she had seven brothers and is the only girl in Nasel, Washington. May is the Miracle, which you'll find out about if you read this book. I think this book teaches about survival and how to survive being a girl. Another main idea in the book was miracles. Miracles I like best, because they're God's way of showing he cares for us. May was the miracle of the family, because she was the only girl. (I think she was the miracle because she was the only girl. The book really didn't say.) I would recommend this book to anyone, because it teaches that just because you're a girl doesn't mean you can't do what boys do. Girls of today do what boys do, but back in the late 1800's a girl had to be a proper young lady. Some people might just like the book and have no reason why. This book is excellent, so why shouldn't I be voting for it. If you wish to see why I like this book so much, read the book, Our Only May Amelia, today.

Summary: Finally...a Realistic Tomboy!
Review: I really liked this book. It didn't have a slow beginning and more than once I was drawn in by the action and adventure. One of the best things I liked about this book was that May Amelia was so realistic. I got this book because I thought it would be entertaining, but expected it to be a typical "tomboy book" - the kind where the heroine hates all things feminine. May Amelia is certainly not a Proper Young Lady, as she thinks a girl's life is boring and is always getting into very unladylike mishaps. But she's not totally outlawing anything girly. She treasures a beautiful doll her aunt gives her, wants to go to a dance, and enjoys taking care of her baby sister. I like that. "Tomboys" don't always stick their hands over their ears and scream "La, la, la, I can't hear you!" if you so much as mention a dress. I'm glad May Amelia wasn't another one-sided character that could only exist in a book.

The reason I gave this book only four stars was because sometimes the way it was written was confusing - overuse of capital letters and underuse of quotation marks. But after the first chapter I was used to it. Kind of like subtitles in a foreign movie. Anyway, I loved the book! It was sad, but I don't mind that.

Summary: It's a tough life out there but nothing Amelia can't handle
Review: OUR ONLY MAY AMELIA
May Amelia lives on the Nasel River in Washington. May Amelia has seven brothers and one cousin, Kaarlo, who lives with them. Amelia and Kaarlo have some clashes when she plays some trick on him. Then she gets throne in the pigpen. Other frightful events happen that are like that Her mother is going to have a baby and May wants it to be a girl so bad because she's the only girl on the Nasel. Her closest brother Wilbert always sticks up for her and goes on adventures with her to places: Baby Island, Astoria and swimming in the Nasel. He even teaches her how to shoot a gun. Will everything change when cruel Grandma Patients who hates every living thing?

I totally enjoyed this book because it's marvelous to read books where girls have lots of spunk. For me the best scene in the book is when she stands up to her mean old granny. Even when she knows that the consequences are terrifying. I like this scene best because it takes lots of courage to do that. I also live in Washington and it's interesting to go to the spot where this took place. I felt so honored and special that I could be to that very place. Kids and gown-ups that have lots of spunk should read this.

Summary: Our Only May Amelia
Review: The unconventional writing style and the unique setting of 1899 Washington state makes this story feel different from other pioneer stories, and the ethnic group of the first generation Finnish family is unique, too. The 1st person present tense and atypical punctuation and capitalization forms intensify the originalility of this story. May Amelia is an appealing character because of her courage and independance, especially in the time era this book is set. The universal feelings May Amelia struggles with draw the reader into the story. "Our Only May Amelia" lingers on well after the last page.

Summary: May Amelia is Cool
Review: This is an excellent book...I read it when I was in 4th grade and I enjoyed it a lot! The only thing I dont like is that it doesn't have quotation marks and it is hard to tell when someone is talking. Otherwise, it is a good book about a 12 year old girl who has 7 brohters (Including Kaalo, a cousin). She goes on adventures and it is really exciting!

Summary: Great Historical Fiction selection
Review: Our May Amelia, a book by Jennifer L. Holm is a great selection for a Historical fiction book. When May Amelia is coming full circle into an adolescent, she finds her pre-teen years natural to be a rough tomboy rather than a pretty young lady. The story begins with May Amelia introducing her siblings, and a brief description of her infamous boy-like appearance. After a lot of disapproval, May Amelia is accepted as the adventurous young lady she is to her family.
I really enjoyed this book. The meaning is very clear: do not judge a book by its cover-character counts. Amelia's despair of making her father and grandmother pleased causes her to lose hope. Although her grandmother and father tend to disapprove of her unlady-like mannerisms, her brother Wilbert shows support and lets her know that he loves and cares for her no matter what. Wibert, her brother, is a very important person who helps May in the times of non-conformity. Amelia's journey of finding herself is essential.
This book was a great story about a rebellious young girl who was adventurous in the pioneering days. Our May Amelia would be a perfect book to promote young-readers and create a valuable family lesson plan.
