Summary: Childhood Revisted
Review: Not only do you have good 'ol Charlie Brown and Snoopy in all their glory you get to be there from the conception of this American icon. This book is great on facts and tidbits as well as the best of the strip! A must have for any fan!

Summary: A splendid collection, whit some question unanswered
Review: Charlie Brown,Linus,Lucy and Snoopy and their friends will remain forever in our hearts.Peanuts(Sparky was right, what a silly name for so wonderful a comic !) has been the gratest comic strip to middle fifties to middle seventies (later,well...there were sparks in the fading embers, but the zest was gone). We would have welcome some hints of Internet, the fall of Berlin wall, space exploration, the gulf war,but Snoopy's imagination sank in the past.A full reprint of the golden years 1966-1969 would have been welcome. The nineties's Peanuts are the most depressing pap...completely out of touch whit reality. But this book still stands as a precious document of the evolution -and,alas,the involution of one of the greatest comics, maybe THE greatest of this ending century. One wonders,by the way,why Schulz decided of sending away Lucy and Linus in 1966,and what is the meaning of Linus (and Rerun ) patting birds on their heads. Not to mention the weird Pig Pen and the proliferation of Snoopy's brothers. In one of the earliest strips Snoopy says "I was an only dog".And,much later,a family reunion went so bad that a disillusioned Snoopy gave himself to the dubious psychiatric help of Lucy. What contrast to the mawkish sentimentalism of the latest strips! And Snoopy in the independence wars...if this had gotten on,we would hawe seen Snoopy on Columbus' ship!

Summary: Good Peanuts collection, but weak presentation
Review: This is a good Peanuts collection, but the material could have been presented better. For a fifty-year retrospective collection there should have been detailed discussions of each character, and you should be able to easily find the strips where each character was introduced. Instead the book is organized chronologically, e.g. the 50's, the 60's, the 70's. There are comments from Schultz sprinkled throughout the book in the margins near relevant strips, but if you wanted to find out what Schulz had to say about Sally, you would have to hunt for a long time.

Some of the reprinted strips have dirty gray backgrounds, which I assume is due to the age and condition of the archived material. This kind of artifact could have been easily corrected; I don't understand why it was not done.

Given this book's premium price, and the fact that there is no new material here except for (maybe) Schulz's sparsely scattered comments, the publisher should have done much more to add value. For this reason I can't give this book five stars. The weak presentation of the material precludes a four-star rating, so I give it three stars. Schulz was a genius, but I think his publisher got lazy on this one.

Summary: An Appropriate and Touching Tribute
Review: As a fan of Peanuts since I was in diapers (my sister and I saw more of the Charlie Brown television shows and movies that any Disney film), I found this book to be a apropos and very touching tribute to a comic strip that has been a part of my life and American pop culture for 50 years.

I have not seen the strip printed twice in the book as another reviewer has pointed out, but I will look for that. :)

The strips are chosen with great care, and I truly enjoyed the pictures of the Broadway revival of "You're A Good Man Charlie Brown!" Overall, a wonderful job.

(As further testament to my love of Peanuts, I am listening to "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown" as I write this! :)

Summary: A Six Star Book!
Review: I was really saddened by Charles Schulz's death.

Snoopy, Charlie Brown and friends has brought so much life into so many lives. This book captures the best of the best, the man as well as the work.

I keep my copy at work. In times of corporate madness I let the book fall open - its amazing how true to life and helpful Mr Schulz's insights are.

Summary: A fitting tribute
Review: This book is certainly an appropriate tribute to the greatest comic strip of all time. It gives us a good dose of the best from each decade. My favorite aspect is the great margin notes by Charles Schulz, wherein he gives us fascinating background comments on the evolution of Peanuts and on ideas behind specific strips. My only regret, and the reason I gave the book 4 stars instead of 5, is that most of the Sunday samples of Peanuts are not in color here. They would have been in color originally, and I like seeing them that way. But this is certainly a terrific book to own, and I highly recommend it.

Summary: We love you Sparky!
Review: I'm not going to go into tremendous detail about how much I love this comic strip. Charles Schultz death was a shock but no great surprise as we occasionally heard sporadic news of his failing health. Or was it a surprise? I mean the man has been drawing these characters for years. I'm so used to seeing Peanuts strips in newspapers, etc. that it's hard to believe that the creator has passed on. It's weird. But this book is a splendid account of how his talent, love and imagination went into creating the best comic strip in the last 50 years. My only gripe is that the book isn't thicker and that some of my favorite strips aren't in there. But nevertheless, there are a lot of good ones. 1000 good ones! If you love Charlie Brown, Snoopy and the rest of the gang, buy this book! Mr. Schultz was one of the great contributors of people who tried to make the 20th century bearable by showing us something funny, though-provoking, touching and wonderful. Thanks Charlie Brown. It'll feel weird not seeing any new adventures in your life.

Summary: GREATEST PEANUTS BOOK EVER!
Review: This is truly a great book for any Peanuts fans (or non-fan) With over 1,000 strips in it, almost anyone will love the classic Peanuts humor!

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: What a great tribute!
Review: I suspect I was not the only one who entered the word "Peanuts" into the Amazon search engine when I hear that Charles Schulz had died. The magic of "Peanuts", I think, is that Mr. Schulz had his finger closely on the pulse not really of children, but of adults who take their childhood with them as they grow older. None of the "Peanuts" really behaves or thinks like a child, and that's why those of us who are Charlie Browns can identify with Charlie Brown, and those of us who are Lucys can identify with Lucy, and all of us who would love to be Snoopy can identify with Snoopy. The 50th anniversary book is magnificently designed, and it is just as perfect as perfect can be. God rest Mr. Schulz's soul -- what an American classic he was!

Summary: PEANUTS- THE GREATEST JOY TO READ
Review: PEANUTS IS CHARLES SCHULZ'S LIFE, THOUGHT'S AND DREAMS. IT IS HIS LIFE AS HE GREW UP. FRIENDS WHO WERE CLOSE TO HIM ARE IN THE CHARACTER'S HE DRAWS. I WAS JUST LIKE SCHULZ IN MY YOUNG CHILDHOOD DAYS, SHY, NIEVE, NOT GOOD AT ANYTHING. I REALLY RELATE TO THE CHARACTER'S. IT IS WRITTEN IN THE EYE'S OF THE CHILDREN...NO ADULTS HAVE EVER BEEN SEEN IN THE CARTOONS. PEANUTS WILL ALWAYS BE ON TOP OF MY LIST AS THE BEST CARTOON OF ALL TIMES. CHARLES SCHULZ WILL BE GREATLY MISSED AND NEVER REPLACED.
