Summary: Par excellent!
Review: It's as if H.H.Munro were reincarnated and he enjoyed cross-hatching. Brilliant and hilarious, macabre and devious. For those who wish it was still respectable to list 'Gentleman' as their occupation. And women, too.

Summary: Magnificantly dark
Review: I was first introduced to Mr. Edward Gorrey's work when I bought his calandar. I loved it! One of the pictures on it was "A is for Amy who fell down the stairs." and from that point on, I was hooked! I went to my local bookstore to see if they carried his work and they didn't! [gasp] so, I went to this store called Hot Topic and sure enough, there it was. When I read it I found out that the rest of the book was as morbid and gothic as the store I bought it in. In conclusion, I completely recommend this wonderful book to you!

Summary: A morbid alphabet book.
Review: This, as I already said, is a morbid alphabet book. The illustrations are very good. And have a sort of Poe-esque style. If Poe were an illustrator. The book made me want to read more of Gorey's work. I looked him up and found that he has writen many books. Read this book. Most likely you won't regret it.

Summary: Wickedly Funny
Review: Gorey writes and illustrates in the tradition of the original Brothers Grimm stories--ghoulish, yet morbidly funny. When you read this book you can't help but smile in macabre glee. A wonderful, sick blend of humor and shocking tastelessness.

Summary: Edgar Poe + Mother Goose on crack + a blender = GOREY!!
Review: I was first introduced to the glory that is Gorey through the courtesy of my local PBS station, which, to fill time, would often show the Dark Master's illustrations while someone read his "storylines" over it. Oh, I was SO hooked. If you love Poe, Surrealism, Goya, death and madness, endangered children, and sick humour in general, you will love "The Tinies", as well as any of Gorey's many and varied masterpieces. He's dark, disturbing, and hideously delicious!

Summary: Lovely Bits of Gorey
Review: If you are the type of person who kicks puppies, laughs at the sight of auto accidents , or loves the sight of people getting hit in the "privates" on America's Funniest Home Videos---then you need help! But if you can laugh at the dark, twisted side of life and still come out normal , then dear, this book is for you!The Gashlycrumb Tinies is a delightful (if not hilarious) book , giving a twist to the alphabet. This is not the ABC's you learned in kindergarten!! :)

Summary: Gorey's Best!
Review: A poignant moment: A little boy is opening a parcel. His name is Titus. In a few seconds he will be blown to pieces. We might feel sorry for him... if we weren't enjoying it so much. Gorey at his best --- superb black comedy.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: delightfully macabre
Review: Delightful and twistedly humorous. Gorey's schoolboys and schoolgirls meet with their demises in very unique ways. The illustrations are of course fabulous. I have the "1998 deluxe engagement book version."

Summary: Will grace my bookshelf forever...
Review: To begin with, this book is how I learned my ABCs as a young child. Does this mean that I would suggest others use it for this purpose? No. But for those of you with a proclivity for the macabre and the strangely beautiful... please buy this tiny gem of a book. I have bought it for all of my friends (all adults I assure you...) and they delight in its uneasy glee in describing the demise of 26 unique children. Call it funny, call it odd, or call it horrid... it's still a must-read!

Summary: Drop-Dead Humor from A to Z
Review: Edward Gorey's dark subversion of children's alphabet books is a tiny book guaranteed to bring a sinister smile to the face of every one with a twisted sense of humor. Opening with "A is for Amy who fell down the stairs" and running all the way to "Z is for Zilla who drank too much gin," the simple but inspired rhymes combine with Gorey's pseudo-Victorian Gothic crosshatch illustrations to wickedly funny effect.

Although his disaster-specific illustrations (such as "R is Rhoda consumed by a fire") are macabrely witty, Gorey is really at his best when he leaves the most to your imagination. Consequently, it is really his illustrations of impending doom ("P is for Prue trampled flat in a brawl") or the shocking aftermath of an unknown circumstance ("K is for Kate who was struck with an ax") that are most likely to inspire a mischievous grin.

Although you might not want to give this to your anxiety-prone niece or your traumatized stepson as a Christmas stocking stuffer unless you wish to make them worry about your intent, older children will likely find it every bit as comical as adults--but adults are the real audience here, much more likely to catch the drop-dead humor involved. Wickedly amusing and sinisterly charming in every way.
