Summary: A must have for Ross fans (6 stars)
Review: I have seen Alex Ross refered to as the Norman Rockwell of comic book artists. I would compare him more to Michelangelo, reflecting more of his genius, breaking of the mold, realism, dynamism, depiction of superheroes as divine beings, and being light years ahead of his contemporaries (using this comparison I guess that Greg Horn might be Ross' Raphael). I have been collecting Alex Ross covers, interior art, posters, lithographs, treasury editions, Wizards covers and interior art, sculptures, and busts even before Marvels #1 came out. I have read many of the interviews that have been published over the years, and have had the pleasure of meeting him and seeing him in person three times. I have a scrapbook including most of his published work. In spite of being so familiar with this comic book Michelangelo, I was still awe-struck and amazed at seeing so much of his artwork presented in such a stylized, attractive manner by Chip Kidd. I think it was the breadth and totality of his DC work that is overwhelming. I have enjoyed his art immensely but in a piecemeal fashion, taking it in small doses from month to month and eagerly awaiting each new work as previewed in Previews or Wizard. But to see it all together in a single volume, page after sumptuous page, will leave Alex Ross fans very happy and eager to see a Marvel version of his work. After seeing this book for the first time, it has sky-rocketed ahead to being the favorite and most cherished book in my collection- not only of the comics and graphic art genre but of all my books. If left on a deserted island I will want to be sure and bring this book along to enjoy again and again. The cover from Wizard #99 is reproduced without any copy. This is the only time I have ever seen this image intact and without any additional copy. I think that this would make a wonderful lithograph and was glad to see it presented here. The only criticism I have is that the final three pages were not a gatefold. These pages feature recent covers from Wizards #141 (Bats), #144 (Supes), and #146 (Wonder Woman). Perhaps this will come out as a lithograph or poster in the near future, but it would have been a nice touch to put these three images together in a coherent whole as it was originally intended in a fold out gatefold. Just as Wizard has come out with a second edition of their Alex Ross Millenium Edition, hopefully we will have a second edition of Myhtology to incorporate Alex's future DC art. If so, let's put these images together insted of having them on successive pages. A small criticism in light of how much I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Highest possible recommendation. Look forward to the Marvel version!!!!

Summary: Go on, lose yourself in this art.
Review: I ordered this book ages ago, and had completely forgotten about it until the e-mail came telling me that it was on it's way. All I can say is, "WOW".
For a fan of Alex Ross (and if you are a fan of comics or painting, how can you NOT be a fan of Ross's), this book is an utter treat. The printing is sumptuous, the colours perfect and the depictions make you yearn for them to be as real as they look.
If you are interested in the DC universe, and I have to admit that I was always a Marvel-Boy, this book will show you these legends in the light which they deserve. Buy this book now, and wallow in it's beauty. Alex, you've made a good'un Lad.

Summary: A must-have book
Review: I regularily purchase art monographs and am always amazed by the sheer incompetence of both their editors and designers. Majority of those titles have long (often too long) essays, small (often b/w???) reproductions and large margins.
Why they chose to edit the ART MONOGRAPHS that way is beyond me.
This book (along with all titles edited by Cathy and Arnie Fenner, for that matter) should serve as a model of how an artbook should look like: large, high quality reproductions, minimum text and no margins. Both its editor Chip Kidd and photographer Geoff Spear have done a great job.

(I am not mentioning Mr Ross, since I assume that all interested in this title are always familiar with his unique style.)

Summary: Viscerally enticing
Review: I simply love this book! Seemingly every page is filled with Ross' lavish and wonderfull rendering of DC's most beloved characters. Having these illustrations gathered into one volume reminds me of why I love comics. My son and I have already spent hours sitting together enjoying this book. Bring on the Marvel edition!

Summary: Amazing artwork from the genius Alex Ross!!!!
Review: I totally agree with all the other readers whose opinions have been published by Amazon.com concerning to this book.

After all, when it comes to Alex Ross work, there's no definition for such quality and living portraits of everyone's so much beloved super heroes, including Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Green Lantern, Hawkman and of course the Man of Steel, Superman.

Alex Ross drawing is not only stunning, but unique; it's not only beautiful, it's divine; it's not only perfect, it's not from this planet at all...

I must confess that I was thinking about getting this book for a long time, but now I see I couldn't wait any longer. I'm glad I bought it now. Alex Ross is for sure the modern age Norman Rockwell, as some people say.

Mr. Ross close atention to the details are also very impressive. So is the drawing process of elaborating every character based on live models.

Finishing this words, I'd like to quote a reader that said about MITHOLOGY: "It's really worth the money and is a great coffee table book for the super hero fan in all of us".

So run and get your copy of Mithology now. I can assure you: you won't regret it.

Cheers!!

Summary: Incredible Book
Review: If you are as big a fan as me of Alex Ross, then rush out a find a copy of this book. No matter what. It gives everything you need to know about his art and the stories behind them. It shows the evolutions of his characters and his backgrounds into how they came to be. If you are in love with comics and the characters then get this. It really shows his love for them as well. From full page spreads to single sketchbook black and white shots, its has it all. Chip Kidd did a wonderful job putting it together and the book is a great read as well. I've been waiting a long time for the definitive Alex Ross book and it's finally here. It's worth every penny.

Summary: Visually fantastic!
Review: If you have to buy just one published book or comic having to do with Alex Ross, "Mythology" is it. The book is, for the most part, a visual retrospective on Alex Ross' works on DC characters. This edition is thin on text, but heavy on well reproduced yet great artwork. I, being an illustrator myself, really appreciate all the rough drawings and sketches included in the book, because they really show you the methode to Ross' madness.

I also recommend this book for those interested in learning illustration techniques and watercolor. Interestingly enough, you learn a great deal by observing how Ross tries to capture light and color through his work. There is even a page mentioning Andrew Loomis, the great late illustrator and one of Ross' influences. One can definitly see how the artist has drawn inspiration from the golden age illustrators and those of the 40's and 50's. His depiction of Superman is by far my favorit.

Summary: A must for any Alex Ross Fan
Review: Mythology is a complete rundown of the works of Alex Ross. Even since he hit the seen with Marvels, I have been blown away with his incredible attention to detail. No one has brought the characters to life on the pages of a comic book like Alex Ross.

The book does more then reprint some of his best paintings. There is tons of detail on how the poses came about and what his inspirations were. His tributes to the golden age of comics can be found in alot of his work.

Summary: Alex Ross Rocks
Review: Mythology is an appropriate title for this collection. Alex Ross has made great storytelling in comics even more highbrow. This collection illustrates how the pantheon of Gods found in the DC heroes can be made human by the great talent of Alex Ross. Chip Kidd does an excellent job personifying Alex in this book and in person. The photography in the book exemplifies the way Alex uses light to make his characters real.
