Rating: Summary: Recommended for Christian students of the Old Testament Review: Yahweh Is Exalted In Justice: Solidarity And Conflict In Isaiah focuses on the issue of justice as revealed and illustrated in the prophetic book of Isaiah. Thomas Leclerc (Assistant Professor of Old Testament at St. Anselm College, Manchester, New Hampshire) draws upon his many years of study and expertise to show that the three parts comprising the Book of Isaiah derive from different historical eras and uniquely highlight justice. In Isaiah 1-39 the focus is on fidelity and judgement. Isaiah 40-55 treats justice as a manifestation of Yahweh's sovereignty and comparability. Isaiah 56-66 is an obligation of the covenant realizable only through divine intervention. Professor Leclerc comments on both Isaiah's distinctive messages as well as its continuities in theme and theology among the diverse parts. Also provided is an overview of the importance of justice in the Hebrew Bible and liturgical issues revealed through an analysis of Isaiah passages appearing in lectionary readings. Yahweh Is Exalted In Justice is an informative, scholarly work, and highly recommended for Christian students of the Old Testament in general, and the Book of Isaiah in particular.
