Rating: Summary: Christians preparing to work overseas Review: Anyone involved in overseas Christian work is likely to be familiar with the name of Michael Griffiths who has had a lifetime of varied cross cultural experience including having been international director of OMF - one of the largest overseas Christian agencies principal of a Bible college and more recently a popular writer and conference speaker. This book is designed primarily for those preparing to be involved in Christian work overseas, however many others including church ministers will also benefit greatly from reading it. The author takes the title of the book from Kevin Costner's film of Michael Blake's novel "Dances with wolves" which depicts the initial fear then gradual understanding that develops between a lone American cavalry officer and Sioux Indians. Michael Griffith loosely uses key elements from this story as chapter headings to show how overseas Christian workers can move from initial fear and misunderstanding of people in other cultures to a state where they love and understand them and can minister effectively overseas. Chapters deal with culture shock, language learning, multinational teams, appreciating and bonding with the host culture, contextualisation and pastoral issues relating to singleness and married life overseas. The book is written in a non academic, generally easy to read style that will make it accessible to a wide range of readers. This is the sort of book that many overseas Christian workers will wish had been available to them when they were first preparing to go overseas.Other related books that may be of interest to Amazon readers Michael Griffiths A Task unfinished (Monarch,1996) 185pp Michael Blake Dances with wolves (Penguin, 1991)
