Summary: Great help in understanding the Gospel
Review: This book is an excellent commentary on the Gospel according to John. I hope to read all the commentaries published by "The Word Among Us". I started by reading this book first because I have always loved John's writings. From John we learn more about the life of Jesus and the man He was. The commentaries are very helpful for those of us who sometimes struggle with the language of the Bible. They give us new insight into what we are reading.

One of my favorite verses from John is 17:20-21, "I do not pray for these(the apostles) only, but also for those who believe in me through their word, that they may all be one; even as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me." The commentary points out that: "of all the things he could have asked the Father to give us--steadfast faith, hope, love, power, courage--he prayed that we would have the same unity among ourselves that characterized the life of the Trinity." I have always been awed by the fact that Jesus prayed for each of us, now I have an even better understanding of Jesus' prayer for us.

I am a subscriber to the Word Among Us magazine and have enjoyed their daily meditations on the readings from the Mass for years, and would recommend their magazine as well as this book and the other commentaries they have published. You do not have to be a scripture scholar to read the magazine or books, they are written for the average person.
