Summary: A Great Resource!
Review: A wonderful resource! I have read through this book twice now, and have found it to be an excellent resource for discovering insight about our feelings. Dr. Dodd reveals the true nature of feelings as positive expressions of the people God created us to be. The chapters on sadness and anger were especially insightful. This work recognizes that we are spiritual people who have the capability to live fully, authentically, and healthily in relationship with self, others, and most importantly God. The concept of a spiritual root system highlights the means for achieving this full and abundant life. Those who are in search of a deeper, fuller, more meaningful life will certainly find guidance and assistance here.

Summary: GREAT BOOK
Review: I just wanted to quickly respond to a previous review of this book. If there is such a thing truth, then that 'truth' is unalterable. The reviewer writes, ' The Voice of the Heart is not for Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims, Taoists, Mystics or any other group that may hold to a different view of how the Universe is "put together" and how it works. Therefore, it cannot be the vessel containing the "unalterable truth" that the author proclaims.

It seems to me that this particular viewer has a skewed view of what truth is, since if it doesn't agree with every other religious point of view, according to the reviewer, then it is thus does not contain `unalterable truths'. Does it follow that any viewpoint that doesn't agree with all other viewpoints is thus not truth? This book is a fantastic introduction into the nature of the heart, and I highly recommend it for anyone curious and seeking.

Summary: Kool Aid
Review: I once saw a bumper sticker in the Tennessee "Bible Belt" that declared: God said it - I believe it - That settles it! If you can relate to that, then this book is for you. Wrapped in the sheeps clothing of "ancient, timeless, unalterable truth", as experienced by a "clinical therapist and person in recovery", The Voice of the Heart fails to recognize that it is health, recovery, discovery, and healing that are sacred, not the words we use to get us there. Words are words. They are not truths. They are not "holy". I found the book to be "intellectual", difficult to follow the logical reasoning, and without the solid emotional IMPACT of other inspirational, scriptural and poetic writings. Instead of leading the reader to his/her own revelation and understanding of "truth", the author postulates that: "You and I have only eight feelings," - Hurt, Loneliness, Sadness, Anger, Fear, Shame, Guilt and Gladness. Further, he proclaims that all eight feelings are good! And "the eight feelings are the voice of the heart." Hello? That may work for him, and that's okay, but this book is NOT for everybody! Many believe as Kahlil Gibran so eloquently proclaimed in The Prophet: "you should not say, God is in my heart, but rather, I am in the Heart of God." The author completely ignores everything except his Western Christian concepts about the nature of Man and man's relationship with God. The Voice of the Heart is not for Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims, Taoists, Mystics or any other group that may hold to a different view of how the Universe is "put together" and how it works. Therefore, it cannot be the vessel containing the "unalterable truth" that the author proclaims. Be very careful before drinking this "Kool Aid".

Summary: I feel, therefore I am...
Review: This book does a very good job of explaining emotions simply. I was taught that feelings were something I must have under control, that to have feelings about anything was to be weak. Males who showed emotions were sissy's. This author helped me to continue to believe that my feelings are God-given and "okay." They help me to better understand and express what I need. I have spent much of my life ignoring my feelings and continually hurting myself and others. This book helped explain how emotions are the most important information I have in understanding my life experience. It also helped me realize that feelings are the most important thing I can share with my family and friends.

Summary: I feel, therefore I am...
Review: To say that this book has changed my life is such an understatement. The truth revealed in it has allowed me to discover my heart and speak from it. At first I had to look at the list of impaired emotions so that I could find out what I really was really feeling. Once I learned to be honest about those feelings with myself, then to God, and then others, I experienced a freedom that was truly life changing. I now know how to live in fullness and not impairment. Thanks, Chip, for writing this book and revealing such truth.
