Rating: Summary: Gonzalez' book is a Revelation Review:
Do you approach The Revelation Of John with fear and trembling?
Is Revelation such a mystery that you simply avoid it?
Well, Justo Gonzalez' Three Month with Revelation will change all that.
While staying true to the Christian faith and to the message of Revelation's earthly reporter, John on the Island of Patmos, Gonzalez carefully explores the book as a book of hope and love.
You are taken through the book of Revelation a day at a time. Each day typically explores a few verses.
The symbolism that often makes Revelation such a mysterious and labored read is clarified by an exploration of the history and culture of the times. An examination of the situation of the people for whom the book was originally written gives clarity to the book.
Allusions to the Old Testament are pointed out and explained. Gonzalez points out that every verse of Revelation alludes to an Old Testament reference. The original recipients of the book were well versed in what was "their Bible," the Old Testament.
References to some of the most frightening symbols--the beast, Jezebel, four horsemen of the apocalypse, et cetera--are carefully examined. They are placed in the context of the vision in ways that demystifies them while retaining the power of the message they are intended to convey.
This is not a book to be read at a sitting, though this might readily be done if the reader does not read all the bible references as she or he goes along.
It is a study.
It is a three month study.
It is a three month study that lends itself well to devotional reading.
But it is a three month study that is best accomplished as a group study with others.
And it is a three month devotional study that will bless all those who read it.
