Review: Dorothy Drummond has done a great job of presenting four thousand years of history in the Holy Land and demonstrating it's lasting impact on our modern world. But, this work is much more than just a history book: the role of geography, religion, and politics is equally well represented in explaining the past and present in the Holy Land. The author has also included a number of her travel experiences in the Holy Land that add a personal touch to the book. This well-researched book is very educational, but you don't have to be a student or a scholar to get a lot out of it. Numerous maps and a glossary help the reader to connect people, places, and events. The author's completely unbiased treatment of the region's religions and cultures allows the reader to form their own views and perspectives of the region's history and current events. Holy Land Whose Land? is a very interesting book and I highly recommend it.

Summary: Excellent Texbook for Current Affairs
Review: Dorothy Drummond's readable book about the roots of the current Holy Land crisis would be an excellent textbook for high school or college classes concerned with current events.
There are three highly interesting elements to this book, written by someone who obviously has been there many times.
First, she traces roots of each religion involved in the land and the conflict: Judaism, Islam and Christianity, not just as an overview. She starts at the beginning for each belief system and explains how they interplay with each other.
Secondly, she intersperses factual/historical information with descriptions of her visits to each location, spicing it with very human stories involving people she encountered there.
Thirdly, she returns to today's problems, reviews them and projects into the future.
Having taught for 40 years, I would find the book higly useful in helping teens and young adults get a grasp of the intricate yet sad nature of the concern for who belongs in the Holy Land: Everyone or no one?

Review: Holy Land Whose Land? Modern Dilemma Ancient Roots is the perfect reference for a study-discussion group wishing to research the background of today's continuing horror headlines coming out of the Middle east. D.Drummond gives a detailed view of the present situation, then takes the reader through the history of this land called home by three monotheistic religions, finally dealing with possible approaches to peace. A detailed glossary, maps, and photographs--as well as firsthand observations are a welcome addition to this very readable, balanced study.
With so many folks convinced that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict directly affects the war on terrorism, D.Drummond's book definitely enlightens us.

Drummond offers both a critical analysis of current tensions as well as introspective study of history since Biblical times that is unusually accessible to the non-specialist general reader. Holy Land, Whose Land? is a "must-read" for anyone who seeks to better understand the tragedy of contemporary international events taking place in the Mideast today.
