Summary: Compact and Contemporary!
Review: I bought this Bible because I was looking for a small Bible to carry with me everyday that related the scriptures in a truly easily understood way. I refer to it as my "bookbag Bible." The writing flows well, and it has a lot of reference tools packed in a compact, easy to use edition. My only beef is that I've noticed, as a student of Greek, that the translators don't always cling to the original text. So beware of using it for in-depth study. Overall, a good buy.

Summary: Good Translation, a few minor issues
Review: I have been reading my copy of this Bible for about 18 months now, and have greatly enjoyed it!
It is easy to read, flows well and communicates the truth of God's word in easy to understand language.
As others have commented, there have been times that I did not agree with the way something was translated, as I felt it did not match the true intention of the original - Job with the Hippopotamus vs. Behemoth and crocodile vs. Leviathan are two examples, and there are others.
I found myself wishing they had translated those things differently than they did.

It seems somebody was listening! I recently purchased a compact version of the NLT and found out that in July of 2004 they completed what was an 8 year process to publish a Second Edition. I only found this because I am reading through the Bible by listening to it while reading, and the text didn't match what was being read to me.

I started looking for those things that bugged me, and all the ones I have looked for have been modified for the better. My reasons to use other translations for anything other than in-depths study is being lessened, the more I read this second edition.

Enjoy reading this translation, but more importantly, apply the truth to your heart!

Summary: Easy to read bad translation
Review: I would only recommend this if you have trouble reading other translations. Overall I like it, but because its a 'thought-for-thought translation they added alot of personal interpretation.

Two examples I found were, in Job the Behemoth is translated Hippopotamus, although that has been the traditional interpretation, the behemoth may have even been a dinosaur because the Bible says the behemoth 'carries its tail like a cedar'. In the New Testament the NLT translators had the assumption that Leviticus 11 food rules (kosher) don't apply to Christians. Did your physical body change when you became a Christian? If the Bible says its unhealty to eat pork or shellfish, then that applies to everyone, even an Atheist.

Summary: Excellent, Easy to Read Translation
Review: If you have struggled to try to understand scriptures and want a Bible that is an actual translation (not a paraphrase like the Living Bible), written in a way that makes you keep reading...THIS IS THE BIBLE FOR YOU!

I struggled with the King James Version for years. Now, I am able to finally enjoy the Bible for what it is...THE WORD OF GOD!

The slimline is compact enough to easily carry around. With its leather cover, it is an excellent value. I Highly recommend the NLT to the New Believer and to those who are looking to "freshen up" their Bible studies.

Summary: Excellent and accurate Bible version
Review: Just as all Bible versions are not truly accurate accounts of the word of God, it is equally true that some are. I am very pleased with the New Living Translation. It is a true account of the word of God, and I would recommend it to everyone. Sadly, the same cannot be said for all Bible versions.

Summary: The New Living Translation, Slimline Reference Bible
Review: The New Living Translation is quickly becoming my favorite version of the Bible. I started out reading the King James many years ago, moved to the New King James over fifteen years ago, and have also used the New American Standard extensively. Every version of the Bible offers certain benefits, whether of accuracy or readability, but I feel this version offers the most well rounded of them all. While I am certainly no Greek or Hebrew scholar, I have found it's renderings, for the most part, very accurate and eminently readable. It should be remembered that Jesus himself is the Word of God, and no translation should be looked at as perfect. If a particular version draws you closer to him, and brings God's word closer to home, than I'd say it's the one for you. This one is becoming the one for me.
