Summary: Readable history
Review: It's great to have the valuable information in the Oxford History of Christianity in this portable package. This edition is easy to handle and wonderfully easy to read. No, it's not the "Classics Comics" version -- but Mr. McManners has put together essential history in a pleasurable writing style that's as enjoyable as it is useful.

Summary: A Collections of Essays on the History of Christianity
Review: THE OXFORD HISTORY OF CHRISTIANITY is a collection of essays that were originally included in the "The Oxford Illustrated History of Christianity," which is a very nice coffee table book. In other words, this is not a comprehensive treatment of Christian history. Each chapter is an essay written by a prominent historian specializing in the era (i.e. ancient, medieval, etc.), and were intended to accompany illustrations. While the essays are quite good (especially the last three), they do not neccessarily cover all periods thoroughly. Furthermore, the essays are not connected thematically; each essay stands on its own. Readers looking for a more complete, cohesive history may want to look elswhere. But readers who enjoy compliations of historical essays by various historians might find this book useful and informative.
