Summary: A very 90's interpretation of biblical texts
Review: Good and interesting essays, but book as whole and introduction to each essay struggles to present itself as "scholarly" but in offering only historical-political interpretations it fails to grasp or take account of any underlying religious meaning of asceticism. This is academese at its best - arkane and morally bankrupt - and the ideas presented most likely will be forgotten over the course of time as another pseudo-commentary on what Wimbush refers to as the "so called" Scriptures.
