Rating: Summary: Another wonderful book on how to pray Review: I bought this book along with Prayer Steps to Serenity here at Amazon.com. I read it after the Prayer Steps book. It taught me more about the Holy Spirit and how I could follow the Holy Spirit's leading in prayer. I could definitely see the influence that John Bunyan's teachings had on Prayer Steps to Serenity. I highly recommend this book to those in recovery, though it is not a recovery book.
Rating: Summary: From Prayer Book to Personal Prayer Review: John Bunyan wanted to inspire his readers to get away from just praying the prayers in the Prayer Book, and begin praying their own personal prayers directly to God! This book teaches you how to do just that, and it was first written in a time when that was rarely done. The book has had an interesting revision and publication history. Published first with Tyndale House, it was revised and published in the United Kingdom with Word, UK. The Tyndale edition was translated into Japanese and published by Word of Life Ministries in Japan. Kregel published yet another revised and enlarged edition, this one, and then had it translated into Spanish. Bunyan still encourages people to pray today through his writings! This contemporary, edited, edition is for the modern reader, and I know that some will now want to read Bunyan in the original (if they can find the work).
If you have enjoyed my compiled and edited books of John Bunyan, Charles Spurgeon, Edith Schaeffer, Charles Finney, and Andrew Murray, I believe you will also enjoy my "Prayer Steps to Serenity," which teaches truths that I learned from studying these writers for many years. The book follows a 12 Steps and Serenity Prayer format. It is available through Amazon, with ISBN 0595313043. If you know of anyone who is looking for a 12 Step devotional that will help them walk in the power of the Holy Spirit according to the scriptures, you can heartily recommend this book to them. "Prayer Steps to Serenity" is larger than a trade paperback (it is a 9 inch by 6 inch paperback) that includes devotional readings, prayers to encourage you to keep on praying as the Holy Spirit leads, a personal Journey Guide (or workbook), and a Group Journey Guide for prayer and support groups. "Prayer Steps to Serenity" is also supported by two websites that offer a lot of free guides and resources for those seeking more information about Christian recovery and starting Serenity Groups. Go to PrayerSteps.org or SerenityGroups.org for more information or to contact me about John Bunyan or Prayer Steps to Serenity.
Thank you for reading!

Rating: Summary: Simple, but powerful Review: John Bunyan's teachings have been powerful throughout the centuries. This simplified version of _On Praying in the Spirit_ offers easy to read chapters covering topics including "The Right Way to Pray" and "Effective Prayer," as well as 29 additional devotionals. The book is designed in such a way so as to spend an entire month reading it, though I found that it was so readable, it took only a few days. It may be overly simplified for the true Bunyan fan, but a good read for someone interested in learning to pray.
Rating: Summary: overly simplified Review: While I agree with the doctrine described in this book, I find my intelligence insulted by the "updating for modern readers" performed by the editor. I would suggest that you buy the collected works of Bunyan which is in print and will edify you without insulting your intelligence.
