Review: Dr. Dwight Pentecost, Professor Emeritus at Dallas Theological Seminary, has taken the sayings of Jesus Christ as well as the life of Jesus as recorded in the four Gospels and arranges both stories and sayings in a chronological order. Anyone reading the four Gospels without understanding the viewpoints and style of the writers (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John) can come away with a somewhat confused record of the life of Jesus. Dr. Pentecost meticulously compares verse to verse in each Gospel, arranging them in the sequence in which they occur historically, and provides a column-by-column comparison so that the reader is able to see at a glance how each Gospel treats a particular segment of Jesus' life. The first three Gospels (caled the Synoptic Gospels) offer a steady parallel in telling the story of Jesus' work through Judea, Galilee and Samaria. John's Gospel contains material that is not covered by the first three (including the raising of Lazarus) but the four Gospels share much information. Dr. Pentecost approaches the Scriptures from the conservative viewpoint, from the literal, grammatical, historical view and gives even the most casual reader a very helpful guide to discerning WHEN and WHAT Jesus Christ did what he did and said what he said.
