Summary: Almost There
Review: Catholics have no good study Bibles to choose from. The Student Bible by Yancey and Stafford is fantastic. So when I heard a Catholic version was forthcoming, I thought "great!"

And it is great, except for two irksome flaws.

1. Why on earth use the GNT? The (old) RSV would sell the best with Evangelical Catholics, and they are the ones who will be buying this. Is it because Zondervan has a soft-spot for gender-inclusive language? Methinks so.

2. The design for the NIV version is two-color, and this is a flat grey and white. I cannot believe that when they finally published an Evangelical Catholic Bible, Zondervan cheaped out on the two-color design aspect. Also along those lines, why isn't there a compact version? What student wants to carry around a clunker?

That said, It is great they put it out at all. Next printing, perhaps Zondervan will consider at least point 2, if Catholics buy up the first printing. They should--it's a great study Bible with excellent notes.

Summary: GNT Student Bible
Review: This is my favorite Bible. The GNT translation is so easy to read, and the commentary is great. It seems that the commentaries always address the issues that I have questions about as I read the Bible text. I have the goal of reading the whole Bible, and with the GNT Student Bible, I think I can do it a lot more easily. I have decided to buy a copy of this Bible for everyone in my family (wife and kids).

I would like to address Joe Martin's two issues in his review. I do not agree with issue #1. Since this Bible is intended for students, it needs to be one that is easy to read. Unlike the NLT or CEV, the GNT is the only easy reading Bible that has the Imprimatur (approval by Catholic church) for both the old testament and new testament. Even the commentary has a separate Imprimatur. The RSV is not easy to read. It is a very literal translation, and appeals more to conservative Catholic scholars. So I feel that the GNT is the perfect translation for the Catholic version of the Student Bible.

However, I do agree with issue #2. I think it is unfortunate that the Catholic version (GNT) of the Student Bible is not in the two color format like the protestant version (NIV) of the Student Bible.
